#Business confidence rebounds cautiously but not without reservations - the latest 14th edition European Round Table for Industry - ERT semi-annual economic confidence survey is out today! ▶ Business confidence has rebounded to its highest level since May 2022, mainly due to improving sentiment around short-term economic conditions. ▶ It is quite worrying for Europe’s competitiveness that Chairs&CEOs see brighter prospects outside #Europe than within. ▶ #CEOs urge incoming EU leadership to prioritize #competitiveness, innovation, and regulatory improvements highlighting that improving EU regulation is the greatest lever to restore #competitiveness. ▶ Almost three-fourths of CEOs&Chars view actions to advance #SingleMarket integration as having a substantial positive impact on Europe’s competitiveness. CEOs and Chairs of #ERT, gathering some of the best known and biggest European #industrial and #technology companies with operations worldwide, including MOL Group, shared again their views on recent #economic outlook, key #risks and #priorities for the next six months. Excellent piece by Maria Koomen Namita Kambli of The International Center for Future Generations - ICFG and Joseph Foti of Open Government Partnership on Draghi's recommendations - bold investment approach, combined with good governance, can bring the desired progress without the societal downsides of the US or China approach. Two quotes that stood out: "The experiences of the US and China show that strong innovation alone doesn’t guarantee widespread prosperity or mitigate social issues like political instability, low rates of education, and lagging public health." "Ultimately, Europe must couple bold investment with more strategic collaboration, responsible risk-taking, and accountable markets. Otherwise, greater and riskier R&I can ultimately exacerbate fragmentation, inefficiency, corruption, and social and environmental costs, while eroding public trust."

As anniversaries of papers published come and go, those new to #innovationpolicy work continue to discover theorists like Harvard Business School's Michael Porter. They get swept away with creating top-down #clusters and thinking that co-location of industry by governments will be the easy solution. But there is nothing simple about collaboration between government-industry-research.
