Citizen Science for biodiversity: We need your support! 🤝 We are investigating your understanding of #CitizenScience in nature and species conservation as well as its suitability and possible further development for nationwide #biodiversity monitoring. 🌍 Your opinions, thoughts and experiences are of great importance to us. The results of the survey will be incorporated into the development of new concepts and measures for improved biodiversity monitoring! 📊 The survey in cooperation with Nationales Monitoringzentrum zur Biodiversität takes about 15 minutes. Please take the time to take part by 15 July and feel free to share the link with your network: https://lnkd.in/eAVAsuXJ ⬅ Credits: Thomas Rosenthal 📸

Spotlight on #NewSpecies2023 🐟 Swiss Whitefish Species 🧑🔬 Researchers: Selz, Oliver M. & Seehausen, Ole 📍 Location: Lakes Lucerne, Sarnen, and Zug, Switzerland Researchers thought fish diversity in central Europe had been mapped years ago, but New Species 2023 features seven whitefish species from lakes in Switzerland 🇨🇭 Read all about these new species, and others described in 2023: https://buff.ly/3iGq5CU The New Species Report is an annual report from SHOAL, compiling newly discovered and described freshwater fish species to help raise awareness and increase the chances of freshwater biodiversity conservation receiving much needed funding before it is too late. The report is created with the support of IUCN SSC, Freshwater Fish Specialist Group and the California Academy of sciences. #NewSpecies #FreshwaterConvservation

🌱 From Springtails to Pauropods: Soil Biodiversity Monitoring in the UK entoLIVE blog | Dr Frank Ashwood | 🗣️ Free webinar looking at how soil biodiversity can be used to understand the condition and health of soils. Beneath our feet, soils are home to a diverse variety of invertebrates. These range from familiar animals (such as earthworms) to less familiar organisms (such as pauropods and two-pronged bristletails). Understanding which species are present (and which are absent) within a specific soil ecosystem can help us better understand the condition and health of soils. Dr Frank Ashwood provides an overview of the major soil biodiversity monitoring projects currently being undertaken in the UK and globally. https://lnkd.in/eNtgjz6M

Today is Bird Day! 🌱 With #Biodiversity in crisis - action is required to protect species from extinction and ecosystems from severe degradation. A recent first-of-its kind study co-authored by BirdLife International scientists and published in Science Magazine has found that conservation actions are effectively halting and reversing #Biodiversity loss. Evaluating a wide range of conservation interventions across the globe against outcomes, here are some of the key findings: 🌎 Conservation actions improved the state of biodiversity or slowed its decline in most (66%) of the cases compared with no action taken at all 🌎 When the interventions work, they are highly effective “This new analysis is the best evidence to date that conservation interventions make a difference, slowing the loss of species’ populations and habitats and enabling them to recover.” - Stuart Butchart, co-author and chief scientist, BirdLife International #NaturalCapital 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/d8W4AmeK

Is the IUCN red list - to date, the world's primary source of information for what species are endangered - up to the job? Or do some of its current flaws create a false sense of security - and even hinder conservation efforts? A recent scientific publication, co-authored by the Wyss Academy's Dr. Pablo Negret Torres has started a discussion on how in some instances, use of the IUCN red list of threatened species for the development of regional and local conservation planning can negatively affect the decisions taken. Also, the article discusses how global NGOs and organizations shouldn't base their funding decisions solely on the IUCN criteria, as population densities of species and conservation challenges vary locally and regionally. The scientific article was discussed in The Guardian earlier this week. The topic is all the more relevant in light of the upcoming first anniversary of the Global Biodiversity Framework. My research is focused in two main areas, the Fish Pass, fish migration patterns and conservation of freshwater fish species and secondly the patterns and processes underlying the distribution of biodiversity in human-impacted environments.
