Promoting an open and collaborative research culture at #mfnberlin! ✨ We are very pleased to announce that we have been nominated for the Enter Award 2024 in the category "Skills Development". The award recognizes various initiatives to promote #OpenAccess and aims to strengthen the free availability of scientific publications and other materials online. 📚 Our museum library, particularly the Coordination Office for Scientific Publishing, was recognized for its innovative learning formats. These go beyond traditional presentation techniques to make complex topics like open access publishing more understandable and enriching for researchers. 💡 One outstanding initiative is the popular pen-and-paper game "Skill-It – Open your research", which takes participants on an interactive journey showcasing the diverse paths of publishing. The highly popular escape room game presents the opportunities and challenges of open access publishing and has become an integral part of our educational offerings. 🌍 #science #sciencecommunication #wisskomm #wissenschaftskommunikation

📢 It’s #OpenAccess Week 2023! This year’s theme “Community over Commercialization” encourages a candid conversation about which approaches to open scholarship prioritize the best interests of the public and the academic community—and which do not. GetFTR works equally well for open access content as it does for subscription-based content, providing researchers with around 800 million recognizable links in the last year to get them to the most up-to-date version of content, with minimal effort. One of the key differentiators between GetFTR and other services is that it provides discovery tools with entitlement checks at DOI-level, meaning that #OA content in hybrid journals is also accessible when the institution doesn't subscribe. #ResearchTools #Academia #OpenScience #Publishers #Researchers #OAWeek23

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) for the second time, sponsored by the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung. This will be a longer post to share what the HLF is, what we did the whole week and why I always recommend young researchers to apply ... What is the HLF? I would call it a networking conference bringing together young researchers and laureates in CS and maths (Turing award, Fields medal, etc.). It complements the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings - as math and CS don't have a The Nobel Prize. Young researchers can attend in their undergrad, grad and post-grad phase (so 3 times in total) and the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation balances genders, countries, career phases, research areas etc. For me, this is a core driver of interaction and engagement throughout the week. There are three main components: talks and panels, "scientific interaction" and networking. Talks can be technical or inspiring - sometimes they come with technical slides, funny anecdotes or are just speeches. Check out my Twitter account for some impressions: https://lnkd.in/eDy6czy4 What HLF calls "scientific interactions" are either master classes or q&a sessions by laureates in smaller groups. As young researchers, we had to sign up for these. I particularly remember a session with Dan Spielman. I chose his session because I found his style of giving talks incredibly engaging even though it's not my research area. He had great advice for navigating an academic career. Then there is networking - the actual key component of the HLF. We had long coffee breaks, incredible dinners, visits to local institutes/companies or group activities to encourage conversations and exchange. My favourite - this time and last time - dinner at the Technik Museen Sinsheim Speyer. Overall, I can only recommend young researchers to apply. It is an incredible experience - besides, one of the collaborations during my PhD started at HLF 2019, leading to two top-tier ML papers (see https://lnkd.in/e9qBMMqJ). The application period usually ends at the beginning of February each year.
