Almost every project throws a curveball at you that requires you to adjust your thinking or consider alternative solutions. However, there are so many different ‘flavours’ of engineering and each one of them requires a unique set of skills. “One of the best things I did during my graduate scheme was to gain experience with as many different departments as possible. 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 ✨We must appreciate small and little wins because they are the building blocks of growth. For the past two days, I have been working on Week 2 assignments 📄 for the International Career Coaching Program. Assignment 1 asked me to describe my current professional self🧘♂️. This made me think back.🤔 🎬It started when I got into university in 2019, which was the same year the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world. We had to stay inside for 7 months that year. When classes resumed in 2020, everything was moving very quickly and it was difficult to keep up. But I managed to find a way through it. ✨In 2021, I got a great opportunity. The alumni from my department, MV MARINE 2008, awarded me a scholarship that paid my tuition fees that year. That was incredible, it encouraged me to do better and take my studies serious. ✨That same year, I also won another scholarship called AOS Orwell Limited that pays my fees every year. Thanks to AOS Orwell Limited and MV MARINE 2008 for there support🙏 😞My academic journey has ups and downs. I tried getting involved in campus politics, but failed many times. However, I learned a lot from those failed attempts. 🫴In 2022, I saw a need to help junior colleagues and students who were struggling with understanding some engineering courses. I volunteered a lot of times to help the students community with the faculty of engineering student executives support. So I started organizing tutorial classes and sessions. Over the years, I have coached and tutored over 500 students from various engineering departments in RSU. This would not have been possible without three of my friends who helped me: Shammah Ndubuisi - an excellent petroleum engineering student. Daniel Amaewhule - a very bright mechanical engineering student. Fortune Imaitor - my coursemate, a smart promising marine engineering student. 👏Last year, I got the amazing opportunity to do my industrial training at Shipside Drydock Limited ,A ship repair and maintenance company. ⛴️This exposed me to many new things about the maritime industry. 🏹The main point from my story is that self-reflection is very important for future growth. 🏹It allows you to see your strengths, weaknesses, learn from past experiences, set goals, and make good decisions going forward. #selfreflection #Marineengineering

🚀 Exciting day at the lecture on Fluid Mechanics! 💧 I had the privilege of diving deep into the fascinating world of Fluid Mechanics for the first time. It's incredible to see how this knowledge plays a pivotal role in many industries. Certainly, it aligns with my goals to work in the energy sector in the North Sea or its application for designing a ship whether it is for high speed craft such as AC37 (America's Cup) or reducing drag for oil tankers. I can't help but connect the dots to my career goals. Fluid Mechanics isn't just equations and theories; it's the driving force behind the efficiency and sustainability of the maritime industry in challenging environments. I know I will increase my ocean literacy in the next few months! Being in this lecture reinforces my passion for contributing to the future of green technologies for the engineering industry. A big shoutout to my lecturers, shervin bagheri and Marco Laudato and classmates for making this journey so enriching. I just completed an excellent GHD 's Engineering Consulting virtual simulation on Forage. Keeping the primary focus on a rail road development system, the 4 hours of virtual training solely focuses on the in-depth structure of the company and how GHD is managed. This simulation gave me with all the confidence that I need, in order to excel as a GHD intern in Software Development, Automation or any relevant teams in the coming days. In the simulation I: Completed a job simulation involving an options analysis for different rail alignment options for the GHD transport team. Used design brief documents and preliminary designs to formulate cost and construction time estimates for different rail alignment options. Investigated and compared the impact of each alignment option on stakeholders, the environment and design outcomes. Compared each alignment option using a weighted options analysis spreadsheet and communicated key findings and recommendations to the client in a technical memorandum. I used to be in banking and finance, but I wanted more of a challenge and in career prospects 👉 What do you enjoy about the apprenticeship course? I particularly like the hands-on nature of the learning process. The foundation of knowledge that we are being taught at college and at GES is symbolic. Specialists for shipbuilding The Arktika student team follows a few objectives: to have students learn about career opportunities in shipbuilding, to offer advanced training in certain aspects, to attract young specialists and to continue labor traditions and patriotic education. Student Maxim Akzhigitov comes from Astrakhan. He studies at the university to become a shipbuilder. The young man has got skills of a ship fitter. His native city, Astrakhan, has many companies working in shipbuilding, but he wanted to see a truly big plant. "For us, this is an opportunity to learn something new, to get additional education, additional opportunities, new connections, new contacts, and to see new cities," he told TASS, adding after the university he could return to Severodvinsk to work there. "Because it is interesting here, there are many more production capacities, more opportunities," he added. According to Dmitry Fedyunin, the company needs specialists and is ready to invite them from other regions. Laying cables on ships is largely manual labor, which is almost impossible to automate. "We are working with them, identifying our potential future employees. We will talk to them and will invite them to work with us," he said. Additionally, if the company is satisfied with the work of the student team, it will suggest extending the experience to other enterprises within the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC). Albert Talipov studies at the Kazan State Energy University to become an industrial power engineer. During this project, he has mastered electrical installation and received a new specialty, as well as teamwork skills. "I've finished my first year, I am 18 years old, and - right to the plant. Generally speaking, after university, people normally take senior positions. We here are working with workers to understand how it works, how the team is organized, so that in future we could manage properly," he told TASS. "We will bring home this valuable experience." About the project The project's organizers are the Russian Student Teams Organization, its branch in the Arkhangelsk Region, the Arkhangelsk Region and Severodvinsk' Organization of Student Teams Veterans, the Arktika Northern Production Association with the support of the Arkhangelsk Region's Agency for Youth Affairs, and Severodvinsk's city administration. I’ve recently gotten one of those advices you know you just can’t keep to yourself, this time from my manager at my new role, and this takes me back to a discussion I had with my good friend Ifeanyi Ohanyere, MBA a couple of weeks ago. My good friend and I after critically examining the issue of formal training vs experience, we saw that in as much as formal training is important, gaining hands on experience is super important. On this note, I’ll throwback to one of the questions I was asked when I interviewed at British Steel. What is the first thing you would do if you had to carry out maintenance on an equipment I was asked. I said isolation…, and at the mention of isolation my interviewer began writing something down. I never said anything about immobilisation, and frankly I never would have but I remembered that we isolated pipelines before we did valve replacements back when I was an undergraduate intern. Formal training within the four walls of a classroom never taught me this, but doing the job back at First Patriot as an intern did. And years later, I still remembered because I did it and did it several times. So if you ask me, I think that experience, no matter how little, especially as young persons/students is absolutely important. And going back to what my manager told me, this coming while he explained crane sizing for lifting operations to me, he said and I quote “Nothing prepares you more than experience”. And I honestly think experience does a lot to prepare us as young people. So dear young people, take that opportunity to gain experience, and remember that we must keep learning and growing, both from formal training and from building on the job experience.
