Okay, Let's talk about Amplitude in ventilation...... Your amplitude is going to be your chest wiggle. Ideally, you want your patient to be wiggling down to the thighs. You control your amplitude by adjusting the power. Adjusting the power causes the piston to swing on the oscillator, this causes the volumes to be disrupted and you can visually see this on the patient as the wiggle. You can check to see if the piston is swinging evenly on the oscillator and even adjust the piston on the Sensormedics A. * An increase in amplitude, increases volume/wiggle= blows off more CO2 * A decrease in amplitude, decreases volume/wiggle=retains more CO2 Initial settings of amplitude should be about twice the MAP on the oscillator. So, if you set your MAP on 32, shoot for an amplitude of 64. If your amplitude is reaching 3X your MAP, time to reevaluate other settings on the oscillator for ventilation. The amplitude can change based on several factors. If you need more power a decrease in lung compliance, pneumothorax, mucus plugging, or poor patient positioning can be the culprits. Be sure to trend your power and communicate changes between providers and caregivers, otherwise a change in patient condition can be missed! #respiratory #ventilation #science
