[musings] The beauty of an ensemble cast is the culmination of their strengths orchestrated with precision and timing. On Broadway, the grid iron, or a college campus, each team member understands the importance of their role, but more importantly, they understand how their talents and acumen add heft to that position. Dr. Elizabeth Garrett use to say, “Relentless preparation is the key to success.” A team is best when it works as a system and not a machine. Understand the value of each position you hold through your career. It matters. Be well. #leadershipcoaching #playyourposition

Actions Speak Louder Than Words Implementation > Ideas I recently choreographed an event featuring various performing artists. I had to assemble a team of dancers for different locations and times throughout the event day. During one planning meeting, I mentioned to the event manager that since the theme was #SummerReign, it would be fitting to incorporate a more regal and royal element. I proposed placing thrones around the venue, especially on the red carpet in front of the branding, to encourage people to take photos. Having mentioned this in passing, I didn’t expect much. To my amazement, when I arrived at the event with my team, there were beautifully decorated thrones strategically placed around the venue. We enhanced this attraction by having our dancers, in their captivating costumes, perform near the thrones, encouraging more people to take photos with the performers. This demonstrated the event manager’s strong leadership and listening skills; but more importantly, they implemented the idea. Not only did I feel heard and valued, but I also felt compelled to work with them again. Most importantly, the event manager showed a commitment to action, ensuring the best experience for attendees and the best value for the end client. #TheCreativeGuy #EventManager #Events #Leadership #Eventing 📸: You can see one of the thrones on the red carpet in the picture.

Another insightful article from THR's very own Alex Weprin about the convergence of professional sports and media...great read!
Steph Curry... media mogul? Over lunch in New York last week (yes, he carries his Olympic gold medal around), Curry outlined his vision for his production company, Unanimous Media, and said that he wants to get more time in front of the camera. "It’s allowed me to kind of grow at a steady pace while I’m still playing so that the foundations are there in the places that I know I want to be a part of in the post-career landscape for me. Legacy, impact, it all matters. I wanted to take some swings at the plate while I’m still going." Check it out:

Always work to become a R⭕️CK ⭐️ at whatever you do. This will expand your influence. Take hold of the idea that whatever you do — whatever you have been called to and are responsible for — you are there to perform like an artist. While you might not receive the amount of recognition, accolades, applause or exposure as the stars of stage and screen, the work you do is the same as any Oscar, Emmy or Grammy award winner performing their art. Last night, the ladies next to us were very entertaining at dinner. Really working the staff and each other with story upon revelatory story. It made us want more. It made us want to hear them again. They should’ve been doing standup…. It was a show…an event. In the market, you are a performer as well as a salesperson, leader or teammate, and what you are delivering is the enjoyment the audience receives as a result of your stage presence. By doing whatever you do remarkably well, you make yourself Standout as relevant, remarkable and Unforgettable. You will create raving fans for life, and you just might make yourself rich and famous. The world is deeply in need of truly great performers – those who take their art seriously, who understand the power of personality and who actively work to not only Standout from the crowd but to dazzle, Amaze and delight their audience. Convert one skeptic into a believer, and not only will you have a happy customer, you’ll have also created a performance worth talking about. You will enjoy a much fuller life, and you will build some incredible experiences. #rockstar #perform #performance #performanceart #blackhistorymonth

I had no idea my childhood Theater training would teach me #leadership lessons. Yet so many acting lessons translated to my professional career: - The play is bigger than you. Your role is to play the role. - Theater is a team event. It doesn’t matter how talented you are, if you don’t practice with the rest of the actors the play will be a disaster. You must know both your lines and the other players’ lines. - Act on cue. Don’t delay. - Stay in #character at all times. What you’re doing when not delivering your lines is equally, if not more, important than the words you’ll say when it’s time to deliver your lines. - Keep quiet backstage. Even the slightest noise will distract the play, and your disruption could be the only thing the audience remembers after the play is over. - All eyes are on you when you’re onstage. Don’t turn your back to the audience. The easiest way to lose connection with the people in the seats is to not look at them. Leadership may not be a #drama show, but each of us plays an important role in the play being written in your department, with your teams, among your organization. Play your part. Play it well. Act on cue. Don’t delay. (Picture circa 1981, while I attended the Ofelia D’Acosta Theater School)

https://lnkd.in/ejN2Q99y Sometimes, Disney songs hold the truth. This year, I discovered that what I thought I needed was not necessarily what I needed. During my job hunt, I tried to find organisations with a progressive, supportive view on employees in which I wouldn't be misunderstood, wouldn't get yelled at, wouldn't be pushed beyond my limits to prove my value, etc. I found them :-D and they asked me about my needs. Do you know how hard it is to assert your needs when you just won the job lottery by getting hired? For me, it was an anxiety rollercoaster since most of my needs were tied to having lived and worked in contexts that didn't see me for who I was and misunderstood me. Stepping beyond stifling boundaries and trying thing you were yelled at or punished for before is hell when you do it. Freeing when you did it, and no one even blinked an eyelid. Which is why I felt pulled in different directions. On the one hand, I wanted to fit in. On the other hand, I wanted to be accepted for who I was. The need to mask and understand all the unwritten rules was sometimes overpowering, which is why it was such a gift to be allowed to be very open about when I bumped into something and not to be given extra rules even though the extra rules were something my anxiety wanted so much. Instead, I got what I needed: proximity, connection, and the opportunity to truly belong. When I lost my way, I found it again through the words of Brenée Brown, who reminded me of the power of vulnerability and that belonging is the opposite of fitting in. Her BRAVING (boundaries, reliability, accountability, vault, integrity, non-judgment, and generosity) acronym is worth living by. These last few months might have been some of the hardest of my life because my biggest enemy was myself. But I didn't shut down, and I kept regulating and communicating. I showed up and tackled my challenges. So, it saddens me that I still feel somewhere that I failed others and myself even though that's nowhere in the feedback I have received. Dratted internalised stigma. Wouldn't it be great if we started with proximity, realistic expectations, connection, etc., at a young age? Not investing in avoiding failure or protecting from it because that doesn't cultivate growth or strength. Instead, invest in proper contexts, social cohesion, and positive coping mechanisms where people can belong and add value.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.... This was Walt Disney's "first version" of what would become Mickey Mouse. When Oswald wasn't so successful Disney went back to his drawing board and kept working. Disney's first cartoon studio went bankrupt and failed. When that happened, he moved to Los Angeles with $40 in his pocket and tried to become an actor. That didn't work out either. His estimated 300 pitches to banks to fund Disney World were met with rejection. But he never gave up. He was a true leader and visionary. He persevered over and over again because he had a goal and was determined to achieve it. Today the Walt Disney World Company is literally known around the world. So, the point here is never give up. As a leader you will be faced with challenges, hardships, rejections, etc. Keep your eye on the goal and keep moving forward. In order to do that - you MUST have the support system in place to help you get there. Time for yourself, accountability partners, proper resources, a balanced life perspective, a coach, etc. These are just a few of the fundamental supports you will need to achieve your goals. Take the time to evaluate what you want and how to achieve it. Be realistic in your planning and make sure you have all the necessary support systems in place. Most importantly, make sure you actually use the support systems you have. #determination #setbacks #grit #leaders #perseverance #perserverancepaysoff

Emma Stone -- Leadership Unveiled in Plain View 🌟 As I watched Emma Stone gracefully clinch the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for "Poor Things," I couldn't help but be captivated by her leadership prowess. Look no further for a leadership role model as Emma Stone is the beacon you need. Let's dissect leadership in plain view: 📽 1. Humility ( ⏱ 0:05 - 00:25): - Humility is the constant acknowledgment that there's room for improvement, coupled with a genuine recognition of your own talents. Take-away: No matter how stellar you are, maintain humility with the expectation that someone else might surpass you. Yes, even a two-time Oscar award winner. 2. Courage ( ⏱ 0:26 - 00:34): - Stepping onto the stage, she bravely 'asks for help,' declaring, "My dress, my dress is broken." Take-Away: When issues surface, enlist help to swiftly address risks and find solutions. 3. Truly Seeing Others ( ⏱ 0:47 - 0:50): - Emma, en route to the 🎤, realizes she forgot to thank Charlize Theron and loops back to express gratitude. Take Away: Look around and spread kindness, your impact is bigger than you realize. 4. Humor ( ⏱ 0:51 - 01:00): - Emma humorously declares, "my dress is broken," playfully blaming it on dancing during "Just Ken." Take-away: Be serious about not taking yourself too seriously. 5. Own Your "Flaws" ( ⏱ 01:00 - 01:10): - Flustered, Emma candidly acknowledges her 'flaws,' fostering confidence and endearing herself to the audience. Take-Away: Your so-called flaws are whatmake you authentic and relatable. 6. Compassion ( ⏱ 01:11 - 01:33): - With only one winner, Emma sincerely thanks and congratulates each finalist, specific and heartfelt. Take-Away: Acknowledge those striving for similar accomplishments when you succeed; it could easily have been someone else on that stage. 7. It's not about me ( ⏱ 01:49 - 03:02): - "Please take yourself out of it." Emma emphasizes the victory as a collaborative effort, recognizing the impact and sacrifice of the broader team and her personal support system. Take-Away: NOBODY wins alone. Realizing this propels you and your team further, faster, and with more fulfillment. ♻ Please share if you think this can be helpful for someone else. #cultureFIRSTleadership #ImNOTcryingYOUREcrying #oscars https://lnkd.in/g5DxtFiV

ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT Did you know that Matthew McConaughey was a keynote speaker at the Association for Talent Development (ATD) national conference last month in New Orleans? For McConaughey, his famous phrase represents a positive outlook: “‘Alright, alright, alright’ is basically three affirmations of the three things that character that I was playing had in that scene,” he said. “I think optimism is survival. And that’s a part of that affirmation even if you’re not getting what you want; it’s about belief.” To read more, see link in comments! #learninganddevelopment #professionaldevelopment
