Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) UK new car registration figures are out for January, painting a worrying picture for EV take-up, which stands at just 14.7% for the month. That's up 21.1% on last January, but that wasn't a great month given the record EV registrations recorded in December 2022. With the #zevmandate standing at 22% for 2024, arguably this is concerning. For the 12 months to January 2024, the rolling average of BEV registrations stands at just 16.6% EXACTLY where it was in January 2023. Overall registrations were up again by 8.2% year-on-year, with PHEV the biggest improver, up 31.1%. Worth noting that the SMMT have started to lump MHEV into petrol and diesel as appropriate, as we have been doing for some time now. CarReward HRUX #ev #uknewcarregistrations

MG Motors launched this EV at a very aggressive price of Rs 9.99 lacs ex-showroom. But you pay extra for battery pack at Rs 3.5 per km (min 1500km/ month commitment). Ofcourse this price is introductory and it will go up is some time. But still very good pricing even if it gets expensive by say Rs 1 lakh. Over 1 lakh km of running you will pay Rs 3.5 lakh extra for the battery. Not a bad deal at all. And there is a buy back option also. But here is something to think about. Is the EV penetration low because of pricing or other barriers like range anxiety and lack of charging infra. Somebody who can buy a top variant of Seltos/Creta/Hyryder/Grand Vitara can easily shell out Rs 22-25 lakhs for this spacious car. Did MG get this right by putting a small 38KWh battery which wouldn't have a real world mileage of more than 275-280km. In the effort to keep the pricing low, did they compromise on one of the most important aspects ? Did they really address the main concern of EV 4W buyers? A bigger battery pack/ range ?
