#Automotive #NVH engineers see at first glance that this is NOT a #MadMax #Porsche. Nevertheless, it's the quietest #Porsche928 in the world and its >30-year history is a) very interesting and b) symbolic of the constant research and improvements for lower exterior noise emission. Since the #intake, the ICE internal combustion engine, the drivetrain and the #exhaust system are silent in this Mad Max car, we can see that it is all about #tire #noise (‘tire road’ to be precise). Modern vehicles, especially BEV, are heavy, and tires are getting wider and harder due to the increased loads, and hard wide tires are simply louder than softer narrow ones. What a great example of encapsulation for pass-by noise source identification - in this case to characterise tyre noise. We have developed many similar test vehicles for our customers over the years and have provided bespoke silencers for intake and exhaust - we call them "infinite mufflers" due to the extreme attenuation requirements. With EU pass-car registrations having to meet a challenging 68dBA limit value by 2026 we should continue to see interest in this pass-by noise development capability.
