It was translated by English exiles who had fled the reign of the Catholic Queen Mary I and settled in Geneva, Switzerland, under the leadership of Protestant reformers. The Geneva Bible was known for its strong Calvinist theology and the inclusion of verse divisions and marginal notes that were sometimes controversial to the authorities, including Queen Elizabeth I. - **Elizabeth's Relationship**: Queen Elizabeth I was supportive of the Protestant Reformation and the spread of Protestant translations of the Bible.
