70 years ago today the U.S. Supreme Court struck down separate but equal schooling, ruling racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. About a generation of students attended integrated schools, but now public schools are again mostly segregated. If the goal is to equip students with tools to adjust to life after school in more diverse workplaces, how do we find education equity? #Brownspromise is the mission of the non-profit #SouthernEducationFoundation. https://lnkd.in/e3j7rvcc

Happy Friday, my LinkedIn friends. Well, my beloved Blue Devils are gone from men and women’s #MarchMadness tournament. At this point I’m sure, many of your brackets are probably busted (like mine). As we head into the last few games, I’m thinking about my #FinalFour with a slightly different lens. Last year, I was all about the sweet sixteen. This year it’s the final four for children and families. At the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, we believe that all families, no matter their background, should have access to the resources they need to raise thriving children. On Healthy Children and Families we pursue grantmaking and programming in four strategies and focal points to make that vision a reality: Care As a Public Good Agenda Setting Leadership and Power Inspiring Change for a New Economic Vision Collective Responsibility for Family Wellbeing We need all four in order to cut down the nets…and advance inclusive economic structures, policies, and practices that ensure families can thrive. There may be high stakes on the court, but there are higher stakes for the nation if we don't make it right for children and families.

We presented the Philadelphia City Council with the following four asks. The FY 2025 Philadelphia must include… 1. Increase city funding for the School District by $100M. 2. Expand the number of children PHLpreK serves by 250. 3. Give children after-school enrichment options by preserving after-school services for 8,000 children served currently by the School District, investing $8.8M for youth programming at recreation centers, and continue $2M for Philly Youth Sports Fund that serves 5,000 more youth. 4. Make neighborhoods safer by redirecting the $4M in cost savings associated with reduced juvenile justice spending to diversion programs. Reference data points to understand why this is necessary for children and youth of Philadelphia. Thank you again to the following council members for putting children first! Kenyatta Johnson Jamie Gauthier, Anthony Phillips, Mark Squilla, Quetcy Lozada, Jim Harrity and many others. Children First (formerly PCCY)

DC CHARITY SPOTLIGHT Teach For America D.C. Region Together with our community, they hope to ensure educational equity for all of our students so that they can work towards a brighter future for our region. Talent and potential are distributed equally across children, but opportunity is not. Today, 25 percent of D.C. children live in poverty—in a region that’s home to half of the top 10 wealthiest counties in the United States. With lifetime earnings closely linked to educational attainment, unequal access to an excellent education can give rise to entrenched poverty that lasts for generations. The path to an excellent education for every child starts with great teachers in classrooms and leaders working to create systemic change. Here at TFA D.C. Region, they work to develop leaders committed to ensuring all children reach their potential. Here, those disparities persist along lines of race and geography. Although they sit just a few miles apart, only 11 percent of schools in D.C.’s Ward 8, east of the Anacostia River, receive a 4- or 5-star rating on their school performance report cards compared to 100 percent of schools in affluent Ward 3. In Virginia, less than 40 percent of 4th graders test proficient in literacy, and black students score more than 10 percentage points behind their white peers on every standardized test. Today, more than 3,300 Teach for America alumni in our region help D.C. to be among the country's fastest-improving urban school districts. Join them—and us—as they reimagine what’s possible for our children. https://lnkd.in/grvm7b84 #dccharity #dcnonprofit #givedc #donatedc #volunteerdc #teachforamerica #teachforamericadc #education #teaching

What is the price of being DEI specialist within Higher Ed while also being a person from an oppressed group? The price is tokenization, burnout, gaslighting, and daily racism… Education should NEVER be privately owned. Donations should NEVER dictate how a college or university operates and financial transparency should be mandatory. While they profit off their silence when a genocide happens, more and more of us are harmed by a system made to propagate distopian systems of power. We need an education reform ASAP, and powered by PEOPLE. And being neurodivergent in higher ed? Loads of daily ableism and an absurd amount of energy apent trying to cope with an unsafe environment with little to no tolerance to dialogue about disabilities. #freepalestine #transparencyinhighered #divest

I need your attention for a moment—this is really important. Imagine knowing your child isn’t getting the same opportunities as other kids, simply because they go to a charter school. That’s the reality we’re facing right here in Rochester. Charter schools only receive $0.58 for every $1.00 given to traditional public schools. This means fewer resources, fewer opportunities, and fewer chances for our kids to reach their full potential. We can’t let this slide. Our kids deserve better. They deserve the same chances, the same support, and the same future as anyone else. That's why I’m inviting you to a Town Hall Meeting on Saturday, November 16th, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Exploration Elementary (1001 Lake Ave, Rochester, NY 14613). We’re going to talk about how YOU can make a difference—how we can fight for equity, how we can make our voices heard, and how we can change the system for our kids. This isn't just about talking. It’s about action—about standing up for our kids, reaching out to legislators, and demanding the change they need. Every child should have access to a quality education, no matter where they go to school. If you care about our community and our kids’ futures, please join us. Let’s stand together and fight for the future our kids deserve. 💙 You can register right here: https://lnkd.in/gPUq2F3T Let’s show up for our kids. Let’s change the story. See you there. 🙌📚 #FightForOurKids #EducationalEquity #CharterChampion #RochesterStrong #MakeADifference
