This holiday commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas in 1865, a pivotal day in American history representing freedom, equality, and justice. One week ago today, it was #WorldSocialJusticeDay! In honor of that day, especially considering it occurs during Black History Month, we want to shine a spotlight on an often mischaracterized and, subsequently, misunderstood group and movement in the U.S. — the Black Panther Party (BPP)! More often than not, the BPP was mischaracterized as comprised of anti-White Black militants; however, in reality, the BPP was a working-class youth-led movement that supported multiracial coalition building; supported their communities with equity-promoting Survival Programs, which provided free food, healthcare, and voter registration drives; promoted self-determination; and established schools in 9 different cities. Additionally, their vision extended beyond the national level. They saw the issues Black Americans have been forced to endure and face as connected to an African decolonization and global liberation movement. For example, Co-Founder Huey P. Newton drew comparisons between the Black American experience and the experience of colonized peoples, such as the Vietnamese. “It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. Audre Lorde; Was born on February 18, 1934 in Harlem, New York, to an African-American family. Her first years of life were marked by the difficulties and challenges inherent in being a black woman in a deeply segregated and discriminatory society. Becoming one of the great references of American black feminism. This fighter for the civil rights used writing to vindicate the oppressions she experienced on her own skin, and developed, along with many others, a form of healing expression from her words. Lorde self-defined as ‘writer, activist, poet, mother, warrior, lesbian, black, woman, feminist, socialist, teacher, librarian’. Her writing always speaks from the core of her being, and is part history, part protest. In the cause of silence, each of us draws the face of her own fear’ Lorde writes, before adding, ‘where the words of women are crying to be heard, we must each of us recognise our responsibility to seek those words out’. Speaking up is powerful, Lorde’s writing tells us, but speaking up to spark action should be at the heart of our politics. Lorde insisted on the importance of recognising differences between women, such as class, race, age, or health – what she called, ‘speaking as’ – in order to use personal experience to challenge the normative view of the world. Today, as we commemorate Juneteenth, we celebrate a pivotal moment in American history—the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Juneteenth is not just a historical event; it's a reminder of the resilience, courage, and enduring quest for justice that defines the American spirit. As HR Director of the Texas Civil Rights Project, I get to support an amazing organization that is on the frontline fighting for people to have justice and equality in Texas. I urge us all to reflect on the significance of this day. Juneteenth symbolizes the power of knowledge, as it was the day when the last enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Yet, our work towards true freedom and equality continues. We must confront systemic injustices, advocate for equitable opportunities, and ensure that every voice is heard and respected. The struggle for civil rights is ongoing, and each of us plays a crucial role in advancing this noble cause. Let's use today as a catalyst for action. Let's educate ourselves, amplify marginalized voices, and advocate for policies that promote inclusivity and equality. Together, we can build a future where every individual can live with dignity, free from discrimination. Happy Juneteenth to all who celebrate. It's never too late to do the right thing! Today we celebrate Juneteenth - a significant milestone in our nation's history when all slaves were declared free. It hasn't always been easy, but it's important to remember history and ensure we are continually moving forward and never backwards. On July 4th, 1776, the US declared independence and became self-governing. The declaration specifically opened with: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." It was another 87 years (1863) before we were able to do the right thing and abolish slavery. Six years later, the 15th amendment passed, giving black people the right to vote. However, it wasn't all the way until 1965 when the Voting Rights Act of 1965 banned racial discrimination in voting. While it's sad that it took us so long, we celebrate these milestones and remember that it is never too late to do the right thing!! #nevertoolate #dotherightthing #juneteenth #equality #justice

The ALA reported a record 4,240 unique book titles were targeted for censorship in 2023 -- a 65% increase from 2022 and a staggering 128% increase from 2021. It's not a surprise that 47% of the books targeted for censorship in 2023 were titles representing the voices and lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals.
