💡 WIN OR LEARN
💎 This story highlights one way Rickson Gracie was raised to be the best in his sport in the world.
🤔 WHY IT MATTERS: When I coached youth baseball, I tried to arrange games in threes. We would play a team better than us, to learn where we had to go (we usually lost). Then we would play a team we were ahead of, to see how far we had come (we always won). Then we played a team at our level where the outcome was uncertain (we won some, we lost some). This approach kept us growing, appreciating our progress, and never backing away from a challenge.
💬 When winning is all that matters, you lose a lot in the bargain.
🗝️ KEY IDEA: We grow at the edge of our ability, not in the middle of our comfort zone.

Watch Cole Hocker. Not favored to place. Not expected to win. But he did what champions do—he dug deep. He found that extra gear. He kicked hard and he kicked late, upsetting the favorites to claim victory.
In business, just like in sports, the odds aren’t always in your favor. The competition might seem unbeatable. The challenges insurmountable. But remember this: Victory doesn’t belong to those who are expected to win. It belongs to those who refuse to lose.
When the pressure mounts and the stakes are high:
Stay disciplined. Stick to your training, your preparation. Know your plan and execute it.
Stay determined. The race isn’t over until you cross the finish line. Keep pushing, keep fighting.
Stay driven. Even when the favorites seem ahead, find that extra gear within yourself. Push harder, push further.
Cole Hocker’s big kick at the end wasn’t luck. It was the result of relentless training, an unbreakable will, and the heart of a champion. In business, be the one with the big kick. Outwork, outlast, and outthink your competition. Success is there for those who refuse to give up.

This has to be the most endearing scene I've seen this week. 😍😍
The Black Ferns are New Zealand's premier women's rugby team and the most dominant team in all of rugby having won six out of nine rugby titles.
But this post is not about the records thy have won on the field. Rather, it is about breaking and setting a new kind of record!
They visited the King of England and without meaning to, they broke an age-old tradition. They asked the King for a hug!
Guess what? He gladly obliged and if you watched to the end, you would see that the King seemed to enjoy the hug as much as they did.
What is interesting is that physical touch with a monarch is rare and often discouraged (enter the protocol team). 😊 Even lesser monarchs and people in positions of authority rarely give hugs except initiated by the person, which is also unusual.
This video taught me the following lessons:
1. Ask.
Quit the what-ifs and probably. Just ask. The worst answer would be a 'no' but then you would have overcome the initial fear of asking. Not to mention that you might get a 'yes.'
2. Even the best of us needs a hug sometimes.
The hug may come in any form: a pat, a word of affirmation, a smile or an actual hug 🫂. Be kind to others and remember yo be kind to yourself too.
3. It is okay not to know everything. What is not okay is now wanting to learn. Don't be too proud to learn, it wouldn't do you any good.
4. Leadership lesson: Don't be afraid to mingle with your people. The truth is that they know who you are. You are the one who must never forget who you are and the responsibility you carry.
Did you learn something too? Do share with us.
Enjoy the rest of your Saturday.

Shohei Ohtani just set a new record in Major League Baseball (MLB), establishing the 50/50 Club as the only player in baseball history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. Everyone is talking about how incredible the feat is... AND IT IS. From a talent perspective, Shohei is a unicorn. Major league players don't often have both the speed and power to reach the 40/40 Club, which has only been achieved by five previous players.
But I want to point something out that I think has been overlooked. Shohei has always been this good. He just has never been able to flex his remarkable skill or live up to his potential up until now. So what made this year so special?
Here's the thing. Baseball is a game of numbers, probability and stats. It's why I love the game, really. The strategy is in the data (see the movie Moneyball). And statistically, Shohei was able to get on base more to steal more bases, and get more at bats to hit more home runs because the team around him moved through the lineup with great success (the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup is one of the best, if not the best in modern baseball history...).
Because Shohei is on the right team with the right players who are doing their jobs to get on base, hit runs, and minimize outs, Shohei's at bat appearance rate went up by a staggering 20% between 2023 (his last year with the Los Angeles Angels) and 2024 (his first year with the Dodgers); paving the way for a record shattering season of baseball for the pitcher who didn't pitch a single game this season.
The lesson: make sure you're on the right team! Your team's performance, culture, leadership, reputation, and investment in you is just as, if not more impactful on your ability to reach peak performance. And, speaking of investment in you... Shohei has the largest contract in MLB history, at $700 million over ten years. A testament that the right team will pay you what you're worth. Don't settle.

Fools
They say that only fools step in where angels fear to tread.
There is more than enough people who think I am a fool to encourage my second comment on this mess.
The simple principle is that changes in governance must have the informed consent of those governed.
It’s one aspect of why I don’t much like the term “governance” - it implies separation and control.
What rugby needs is informed, committed and insightful leadership. That can only come from within.
It is some kind of hierarchy and elite nonsense that this can be achieved by “independence”. Seeking out people with no involvement, experience or commitment to lead anything defies logic and emotion in equal measure.
Frankly this whole debate is misguided.
If we selected All Black teams like this I could even get a run. But not even I think that is a good idea.

🔥 The Decline of American-Born Black Players in MLB 🔥
The number of American-born Black players in MLB has fallen from 19% in 1995 to about 7% today. 📉
Key factors:
🔹 Lack of Domestic Academies: The U.S. has fewer baseball academies compared to countries like the Dominican Republic.
🔹 Impact of the 1994 Crime Bill: Increased incarceration rates among African American men disrupted families, limiting support for young athletes.
🔹 Economic Barriers: High costs of playing baseball make it less accessible for many families in communities of color.
In the 80s and 90s, strong community programs, visible role models, and accessible school sports made baseball a viable path for many Black youth.
Today, we must reinvest in these areas to ensure that all young athletes have the opportunity to pursue their dreams. 🏆
Let’s work together to create a more inclusive and representative future for baseball! ⚾️
