Comprehensive report on the impact of time of use vs flat base electricity rate design for customer bills from Berkeley Labs (in the USA). The study found no consistent relationship between customer bills under flat and time-based rate designs: in some cases, time-based rates increased bill savings relative to flat rates, while they decreased them in others. Strained grids that can't support new housing developments. Here's the situation: Developers are facing delays or having to scrap projects due to a lack of grid capacity. This is stalling progress on building much-needed affordable housing. The situation is likely to worsen as the government pushes for net-zero homes. The Lösungsweg (German for solution): Upgrading the grid infrastructure at both the national and distribution network levels. Exploring smart energy technologies to use existing capacity more efficiently. Battery storage and flexibility models that utilize local renewable energy sources. This is a critical issue that demands immediate attention. According to articles in the Telegraph and Daily Mail, government plans could see new rules for the installation of heat pumps and solar panels in historic buildings. This article explains that – as part of ongoing efforts to hit Net Zero targets – those living in listed properties or conservation areas could be exempt from having to apply for permission to retrofit the technology. This is an interesting development and could be instrumental in retrofitting low-carbon heating solutions in existing buildings. On April 30th, the DOE finalized congressionally mandated standards for water heaters, aiming to save U.S. households around $7.6 billion per year on their energy and water bills. These standards will significantly cut energy waste and harmful carbon pollution.
