9 ways restaurants can incentivise people to swap out meat for plant-based meat. As the demand for sustainable and health-conscious dining options continues to grow, restaurants have a unique opportunity to lead the charge in promoting plant-based meat alternatives. By implementing thoughtful strategies, eateries can encourage customers to make the switch from traditional meat to plant-based options, benefiting both their business and the environment. Here are some effective ways restaurants can incentivize this shift: 1. Menu Placement and Description - Position plant-based options prominently on the menu, not segregated in a special section. - Use appetizing descriptions that focus on flavor, texture, and culinary creativity rather than just highlighting that it's plant-based. - Employ enticing food photography to showcase the visual appeal of plant-based dishes. 2. Price Parity or Discounts - Ensure plant-based options are priced comparably to their meat counterparts to remove cost barriers. - Offer introductory discounts or promotions for first-time plant-based orders to encourage trial. 3. Sampling and Tasting Events - Host tasting events where customers can sample plant-based dishes for free. - Offer small complimentary samples of plant-based options with other orders to pique interest. 4. Loyalty Programs and Rewards - Implement a points system that offers extra rewards for choosing plant-based options. - Create a "Plant-Based Champion" status within loyalty programs, with exclusive perks for frequent plant-based orders. 5. Staff Training and Recommendations - Educate staff about the benefits and flavors of plant-based options so they can confidently recommend and describe them to customers. - Encourage servers to suggest plant-based alternatives when taking orders. 6. Customization and Flexibility - Allow customers to easily substitute plant-based proteins in any dish for a nominal fee or no extra charge. - Create build-your-own meal options that include plant-based proteins alongside traditional meat choices. 7. Collaboration with Popular Plant-Based Brands - Partner with well-known plant-based meat brands to create co-branded menu items, leveraging their marketing power and consumer trust. 8. Emphasize Health and Environmental Benefits - Provide nutritional information that highlights the health benefits of plant-based options. - Use menu icons or brief notes to indicate the environmental impact reduction of choosing plant-based items. 9. Limited-Time Offerings and Seasonal Specials - Introduce exciting, limited-time plant-based dishes to create urgency and appeal to customers' curiosity. - Develop seasonal menus that highlight plant-based ingredients at their peak freshness. When we had Vetomeato up and running, the interesting thing (in both Cambridge and London) was our highest taking days were Mon-weds. When people had indulged too much over the weekend and wanted a healthy meal at the start of the week. Pushing plant based options at the start of the week for any establishment is a no brainier also.
