Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, has its origins in the aftermath of the American Civil War. This was a period marked by deep, lingering wounds and profound loss across the nation. Yet, even as the conflict ended, a tradition of remembrance and reverence began to emerge. Interestingly, the first organized recognition of fallen U.S. soldiers took place on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina. This solemn event was organized by Black Americans, who were resilient in their pursuit of justice and equality in the face of immense pain. This act of honoring the fallen speaks to the courage and honor that is ingrained in the fabric of Black history in America. As we observe Memorial Day today, let us take the time to honor the past, celebrate the present, and commit ourselves to building a better tomorrow. We must let the lessons of history guide us, while drawing strength from the spirit of unity and resilience that defines us as a nation. #MemorialDay2024

WHO KNEW? There is word of some billionaire, white, racist, South African guy who has ruined a large U.S. tech company and who may also be on drugs, and some racist, right wing media folks are going around implying that Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) is turning out black pilots who are far superior to other pilots in the U.S. The billionaire suggested that these pilots were all graduates of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU’s). Apparently, it was recent reports that Boeing’s new 737-9 MAX aircraft has had some issues with loose bolts and door plugs on passenger doors that triggered the assessment of superior, black pilots. The billionaire and some far right news folks reported that black pilots are the only pilots who are responsible for assembly, inspection, maintenance, and repair of aircraft along with actually flying you to or from your destination so they got blamed for the recent Boeing incidents. No pilots of any other race are trained to do all the tasks and have no experience in performing all the tasks so I don’t think non-black pilots with apparently lesser knowledge, experience, skills, and responsibility should be covertly denigrated in this way. As an aside, I wonder if the billionaire and the right wing media are aware of the superior performance of the black Tuskegee Airmen during WWII. They may be really happy to learn about them. Encyclopedia Britannica says, “Altogether, 992 pilots graduated from the Tuskegee Air Field courses, and they flew 1,578 missions and 15,533 sorties, destroyed 261 enemy aircraft, and won more than 850 medals.” And to think, they couldn’t wait until Black History Month to spread the good news or we would have never known all the skills and abilities of all these black pilots. Maybe they were getting us all ready to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday tomorrow. But, I know how the pilots must feel. I’ve had to learn to thoroughly plan, design, build, test, inspect and put stuff into production too! LOL.

In a historic move, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has officially declared March 9 as the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion Day, honoring the remarkable contributions of the predominantly Black, all-female battalion during World War II. This battalion played a crucial role in restoring the military postal system, ensuring effective communication between soldiers and civilians amidst the challenges of wartime. Their dedication and hard work have been recognized with various accolades, including a Congressional Medal of Honor and a monument in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Retired Col. Edna W. Cummings emphasized the significance of this recognition as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of thousands of Black women in the military, whose efforts have historically gone unrecognized. The initiative resonates with the ongoing need to acknowledge the achievements and challenges faced by Black women both in and outside the military. U.S. Representative Kweisi Mfume and Senator Cory McCray also highlighted the importance of commemorating the battalion's legacy, stressing its role in inspiring future generations and preserving vital history.
