EAST-WEST TRANSIT STUDY: The Florida Department of Transportation is in the process of procuring a study team to look at an elevated fixed guideway transportation system for east-west commuting in Miami-Dade County along the Flagler Street corridor. Once a study team is on board, the state is looking at starting the study of alternatives for the route from downtown to Florida International University in February, the department’s Nilia Cartaya told the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust in December. An earlier plan for bus rapid transit running on a 13.5-mile corridor along SR 836 between downtown Miami and a Tamiami terminal was put on hold a year ago by a unanimous vote of the county’s Transportation Planning Organization as the organization’s board sought elevated transit instead of buses. https://lnkd.in/edmfD2pH #FYIMiami #MiamiTodayNews #FDOT #MiamiDadeCounty

Did you know that Miami Tunnel is the first and only twin-bore tunnel in Florida? Since opening to the public in 2014, the tunnel has seen over 11 million trucks and cars pass through to PortMiami! Miami Tunnel was designed with high-quality safety regulations that our operations personnel uphold daily. Need direct access to and from PortMiami? We’ve got you covered! The tunnel provides a smooth roadway to and from the Port while being 100% toll-free. Built as a collaboration project between the Florida Department of Transportation, the Miami-Dade County Government, and the City of Miami Government, the aim was to create a more efficient transport route to the Port. In doing so, we’ve cut downtown Miami truck traffic by 80%, and we’re striving to meet further demand to decongest regional traffic. We have big plans for the future of transportation and look forward to the crucial regional conversations to make South Florida roadways the best in the nation! #MiamiTunnel #PortMiami #MiamiFlorida #TrafficFlow #TunnelVision #MiamiTransportation #EfficientTransportation #Collaboration #MiamiDadeCounty #FloridaDepartmentofTransportation #SustainableTransportation #CityOfMiami #InfrastructureDevelopment

FLAGLER BUS RAPID TRANSIT: A plan to monitor bus rapid transit running down the center of Flagler Street for 2.1 miles in dedicated lanes to be repurposed from existing lanes is to see a November 2027 start for the year-long study of how the concept performs in Miami’s traffic. “Right now we are vetting a traffic methodology through our internal offices and also vetting a safety analysis,” Nilia Cartaya of the Florida Department of Transportation said last month. The aim is to award a construction contract for the pilot program in November 2026. The project would use existing bus stops and routes from Northwest Sixth to 27th avenues at a projected capital cost of $7.3 million. Evaluation of the project would be completed in March 2029, the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust was told. https://lnkd.in/edmfD2pH #FYIMiami #MiamiTodayNews #FlaglerBusRapidTransit #MiamiTransit #TransportationPlanning #FloridaDOT

This news article (https://lnkd.in/gYHtXTiY) describes my presentation to the Victoria Transit Commission as president of Better Island Transit (https://lnkd.in/gqWpRtsH ) which advocates for more frequent and affordable bus service on Vancouver Island, particularly between Victoria and Nanaimo. The current service is terrible; only four daily buses between Victoria and Duncan on a route with 25,000 daily vehicle-trips. Local officials are supportive but this ultimately depends on the Ministry of Transportation shifting funds from highway expansions to public transit service improvements. We hope to make this a provincial election issue. If you agree, please ask Transportation Minister Rob Fleming (Minister.MOTI@gov.bc.ca) and BC Transit CEO Erinn Pinkerton (erinn_pinkerton@bctransit.com), and your MLA (https://lnkd.in/gjiV7mhw) to provide frequent and affordable bus services on the #66 and #70 routes, and to improve interregional bus services throughout BC.

Over the #weekend, as I was freezing and waiting for the ever #punctual Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) (TTC) bus to arrive, I couldn’t help but wonder why aren’t there any Heated #busstop or #bus #stands? I don’t claim to be an #urbanplanner or #infrastructure #sme by any means, but considering it is the most #metropolitan city of #officially the coldest country in the world- (https://lnkd.in/eUQGxwnC) Shouldn’t that be a #common structure? Hopefully this is something the Ontario Ministry of Transportation/ Ministère des Transports de l’Ontario can give attention to in the #future. #innovation #infrastructure
