Those enduring skills are the critical ingredients for flourishing companies and countries.” “Liberal arts education is not value neutral. That is why it is indispensable today. Freedom of thought, critical reasoning, empathy for others and respectful disagreement are paramount for a flourishing democratic society. Without them, we get the unreasoned condemnations so pervasive in today’s malignant public discourse. With them, we have a hope of furthering the shared governance that is vital to America’s pluralistic society.”

Opening global opportunities 🗺️ 🌐 The U.S. Department of State has recognized #UMassAmherst as a Fulbright Top Producing Institution — one of the nation’s universities with the highest number of students, faculty and administrators selected for the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student and Fulbright U.S. Scholar Programs for the 2023-24 academic year. Out of the 170 colleges and universities recognized overall, UMass Amherst is one of only 12 institutions recognized for both the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program this year. It is the only institution in Massachusetts—and one of only three in New England—to receive this distinction. The educational pathways of students in bachelor’s degree programs differ significantly across population groups. Black and Latin American students, followed by White students, had the lowest rates of full-time enrolment in a bachelor’s degree program, compared with other population groups. Meanwhile, Chinese students ranked near the top in bachelor’s degree enrolment rates and were the most likely to graduate, with 79% of Chinese men and 86% of Chinese women graduating within six years of enrolment. It's great to see Canadian hard data. The study could be improved by including urban/rural and first-generation-PSE/other-students dimensions.
