SVP, Marketing & Communications at InfoSum | 🏳️🌈 LGBTQ+ Leader | Podcast Host | Media Leader Future 100 | PMW 100 Powerlist 2024 | AdExchanger Rising Star Finalist | ExchangeWire Rising Star Finalist
🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ As we have been planning our upcoming InfoSummit, I’ve been reflecting on the importance of inclusivity in event planning, specifically focused on the LGBTQ+ community. Creating an environment that welcomes and respects everyone is not just about ticking boxes; it’s about fostering a community where everyone genuinely feels comfortable, seen, and safe. Here are some strategies we’ve employed. I’d love to hear additional ideas! 🗣️ Inclusive Language: Start by rethinking how we greet our audience. Instead of the traditional “ladies and gentlemen,” opt for “guests,” “attendees,” or “everyone.” This change, although small, sets a tone of inclusivity and respect right from the opening moment of the event. 🪪 Pronouns on Name Badges: At InfoSum, we’ve made it standard practice to include a field for pronouns during registration and on name badges. This might seem like a minor detail, but acknowledging and respecting each person’s pronouns can significantly impact normalizing the everyday use of pronouns. 🚾 Gender-Neutral Bathrooms: Venue selection plays a critical role in inclusivity. Part of our venue assessment includes ensuring that gender-neutral bathroom facilities are available. This clearly indicates that the space is designed to be welcoming and accommodating to everyone’s needs. Of course, outside of LGBTQ+ inclusivity, there are many other considerations regarding venue choice, such as accessibility. 📋 Diverse Programming: Representation matters. It’s vital to put LGBTQ+ individuals on stage, not only as experts relevant to your event’s theme but also as voices speaking on LGBTQ+ inclusivity and representation. Showcasing a broad range of perspectives enriches the event for everyone and highlights the importance of diversity in our fields. Shoutout to Vincent Flood, Tim Cross, and the VideoWeek team, who demonstrated this recently at New Video Frontiers with a session focused on inclusive advertising. 📍 Location Politics: In choosing a location for your event, it’s crucial to consider the local political climate, especially in the US, where several states have enacted anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Hosting an event in these locations not only benefits the state financially but also imposes unnecessary stress on the mental well-being of LGBTQ+ attendees. Selecting a venue in a state that supports and protects LGBTQ+ rights is a powerful statement of your event’s commitment to true inclusivity and the safety of all participants. Shoutout to Kenneth Rona, Ph.D., who has been championing this topic and pushing for change from some of the longstanding US events in recent weeks. These initiatives are just the beginning. Creating an inclusive event is an ongoing process that benefits immensely from community input and dialogue. What strategies have you implemented or experienced at events that made you feel welcome and included? #LGBTQ+ #InclusiveEvents

Celebrate Diversity Month was initiated in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity of the world around us. It is a time to recognize and understand our differences, be it gender, race, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, and other factors, while honoring the common essence of humanity. By appreciating our similarities and differences, the month aims to help people foster a deeper understanding of others, regardless of who they are, what they are, or how they live. #celebratediversity #diversity #celebratediversitymonth
