1 in 10 people struggle with eczema, enduring difficult flares that are hard to manage. Thankfully, a recent cross-sectional study published in JAMA Dermatology by UCSF offers hope for the over 31.6 million Americans affected by atopic dermatitis. The study suggests that daily salt intake may significantly affect eczema flares. Eczema is a common chronic skin condition that causes dry, itchy skin. The UCSF researchers found that a high-sodium diet can increase eczema risk. Consuming just one extra gram of sodium per day raises the likelihood of flare-ups by 22%. ### Sodium and Eczema: Sodium, typically consumed as salt, is linked to hypertension and heart disease. Interestingly, sodium is stored in the skin, where it can contribute to eczema inflammation. Limiting dietary sodium intake could be a simple way to manage eczema symptoms. Dr. Katrina Abuabara, MD, associate professor of dermatology at UCSF, stated, "Most Americans overeat salt and can safely reduce their intake to recommended levels." She added, "Eczema flares can be challenging for patients, especially when they can't anticipate them or have no guidance on how to avoid them." ### The Study: Using urine samples and electronic medical records, the study analyzed data from over 215,000 participants aged 30 to 70 from the UK Biobank. The results showed that each additional gram of sodium excreted in urine over 24 hours increased the odds of an eczema diagnosis by 11%, an active case by 16%, and symptom severity by 11%. A follow-up analysis of 13,000 adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey revealed that an extra gram of sodium a day (around half a teaspoon) was associated with 22% higher odds of having an active case of eczema. ### Reducing Salt Without Losing Taste: Most Americans consume over 3,300 mg of salt daily, exceeding the recommended 2,300 mg. To reduce salt intake without sacrificing flavour, consider using herbs, spices, and natural flavour enhancers like tomatoes, onions, garlic, citrus, or parmesan cheese. Enhance your meals with fresh or dried herbs and spices such as basil, cumin, sage, paprika, thyme, cayenne, turmeric, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, dill, onion, rosemary, and parsley. Create your own blends and store them in a cool, dry place. Low-sodium sauces like Worcestershire or soy sauce can also add a flavorful punch without the extra sodium. #Eczema #Health #Nutrition #FunctionalMedicine #Dermatology #LowSodium #HealthyLiving https://lnkd.in/dZEJNi7v

#Biotin shouldn't be considered as something that grows hair. Endocrinologists aren't hair doctors, but often encounter biotin which causes interference with thyroid labs (doesn't cause thyroid disease but messes with the assay). Miniscule research indicates that biotin supplementation may be useful in preventing hair loss. Biotin is readily available in several foods and is made naturally by your gut flora. Biotin deficiency is rare and supplementation most often benefits only the person who sold it to you 🙂. Anecdotal success is often due to the fact that many causes of hair loss are transient and would resolve anyway without intervention (it wasn't the biotin). This article gives some good tips on when to see a #Dermatologist. #hair #itsnotyourthyroid #neendocrinology Omar Nájera, MD Ameer Khowaja MD, M.Sc. (Public Health-HSM), CCD., FEAA. Importance of Vitamin C: 1. Chemical name: Ascorbic acid 2. Vital role: It plays an important role in metabolism of food. 3. Dermatology and Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an essential vitamin for skin. It is responsible for generating new cells in the body. It also helps in removing and deteriorating dead cells from body which blemishes our skin and rejuvenates it. 4. Neurology and Vitamin C: Brain is the most important vital organ of body which controls and coordinates all other body parts. There are many hormones, receptors and sensory nerves in brain. We require vitamin c for proper functioning of these receptors and sensory nerves. Highest amount of vitamin c is present in cortex, amygdala and hippocampus. It has the ability to modulate the glutamatergic neurotransmission because distribution of glutamatergic NMDAR's is the highest in these three areas of brain. That's why when someone feels guidiness they are supposed to take vitamin c supplement to retain their body balance.Even cerebrospinal fluid have a content of vitamin C. 5.Hepatology and Vitamin C: Liver also contains highest amount of vitamin C hence we say vitamin c is responsible for metabolism of food as we know liver too plays a vital role in metabolism of food. Vitamin c ia a water soluble vitamin so it petforms it's function and get excreted through urine. It's not stored in liver banks. Only brain is an organ where it get stored. 6. Endocrinology and Vitamin C: Pancreas do play an important role in our body. Vitamin C is also found in pancreas. It helps in maintaining anti oxidant activity of pancreas and also maintains the plasma levels. Decrease in vitamin c content in pancreas might result in acute pancreatitis, which is then treated by oral administration of vitamin c. 7. Adrenal gland and Vitamin C: Adrenal glands also have vitamin c which plays as a cofactor in catecholamine synthesis and in adrenal steroidogenisis.

[NEW PUBLICATION] 💡 𝗛𝗔𝗜𝗥 𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗦 – 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 We are proud to present the results of a successful collaboration between Monasterium Laboratory Skin & Hair Research Solutions GmbH and Rousselot, recently published in the 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴. 📄 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗟𝗟 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘: https://lnkd.in/edCcDQ6j 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴 Hair loss associated with aging and hair follicle (HF) disorders such as telogen effluvium or male/female pattern hair loss (M/FPHL) results from disruption of the hair follicle cycle and causes severe psychological distress (1). Healthy hair growth, density and fiber quality depend on optimal HF function and low levels of hair shaft damage. To achieve healthy hair, both cosmetic (topically applied) and dietary supplements should be used to improve HF performance and hair shaft properties (2,3). Recent research suggests that dietary supplements with bioactive collagen peptides (CPs) from marine and bovine sources may offer a promising adjunctive treatment to combat hair loss and thinning due to aging or pattern hair loss. 🔎 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘱𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 Using a clinically-relevant human hair follicle organ culture, the researchers focused on the effect of CPs on hair follicle functionality, with the goal of investigating the influence of these peptides, derived from marine and bovine sources, on various parameters. These parameters ranged from the HF growth cycle, cell proliferation and apoptosis, number of epithelial HF stem cells (eHFSCs) and direct progeny, keratin expression, and dermal papilla (DP) cell functions, to hair fiber growth rate, and melanogenesis. 🔹 Both types of CPs reduced the proliferation of K15+ eHFSCs ex vivo while promoting the creation of K19+ and CD34+ stem cell progenies, essential for hair regeneration and maintenance. 🔹 Bovine CPs were found to increase K15+ cells in the bulge area of hair follicles, and marine CPs helped in keeping hair follicles in the growth phase (anagen) for longer periods. These results suggest new avenues in the exploration of collagen peptides for their potential to combat undue hair loss and promote robust hair growth. Congratulations to all the authors for their contribution to this exciting study! The science is now confirming a healthy gut is not only essential for a clear mind, but also clear skin! 🅸🅽 🆃🅷🅴 🅽🅴🆆🆂 A recent review of 42 studies, published in JAMA Dermatology, found the top nutrients to support clear skin in acne-prone individuals: ✅ The highest quality studies showed potential benefits from vitamin D, green tea extract, and probiotics. ✅ Other studies suggested benefits from vitamin B5, omega-3 fatty acids, and gamma linoleic acid. ✅ Zinc was the most commonly studied nutrient, but it only showed benefit in half the studies. Higher doses were more helpful in the short-term. ❗️Long term, high doses of zinc do have some side effects. Though this study only looked at supplements, it shows that nutrients affect your skin! And it goes beyond just acne! 🅳🅸🅳 🆈🅾🆄 🅺🅽🅾🆆 Over the last 7 years, I've seen 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 in clients with 𝗽𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗰𝘇𝗲𝗺𝗮, just by cleaning up their diets, removing gluten and dairy, 2 main gut inflammatory triggers! That's just while they're waiting 2 - 3 weeks for their lab results! Once the lab work comes in, we'll often see that candida, and or other pathogens are the real underlying drivers of eczema or psoriasis! That means that removing the triggering foods is just one piece of the puzzle! You've also got to uncover what's underneath the skin, by paying attention to balancing the gut microbiome. When you feel good in your skin, you're confident with the face you're showing the world. Let me tell you a story about how eating the right foods for YOU can impact your skin. About 7 years ago, I went on a retreat in Malta as an attendee, where Juice Fasting was the main focus. One of the ladies in our group had terrible eczema. She invested a lot to be at this retreat to heal her eczema. We all had to fill out extensive intake forms. She listed her main goal was to heal from her eczema. 𝙒𝙚 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙟𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙠𝙞𝙣 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙖𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙤𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙚'𝙙 𝙙𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙤𝙤𝙣 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙢𝙤𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙚. In fact, it didn't look like eczema anymore. It looked like she was breaking out in hives - which she was. 𝘽𝙚𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩, 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙖 𝙫𝙚𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙮, 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙖𝙙𝙮! It was high in histamine, and she was already sensitive to many other foods, so having this smoothie every day was just adding stress (biochemical) on her body! And 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗜 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀. I love running a Food Sensitivity test alongside my Gut Health Test, before making any nutrition recommendations - because what's good for one, doesn't mean it's good for all, and vice versa. If you're ready to nourish your skin from within, I’m here. Visit the link in comments 👇
