"Overly humble is not making us justice." A leader shared this recently. Those of us from the Gen-X grew up being told not to brag about about our achievements. This mindset of not blowing your own horn though, has some limitations. For eg, during performance review, I've come across talents who are performing yet are unable to articulate, verbally or written, their achievements. Mind you, these talents did a lot and achieved a lot during the year. Some are taken aback when reminded about their achievements. Some just keep quiet. Some will say it is due to team effort. The point is, they seem to downplay their achievements, .......... which makes us wonder at times about their confidence level. Vocalizing success stories is to be encouraged, especially for career comeback folks. Even though there is a gap in employment, recall what were the challenges faced during this gap and how they were overcome. What were the skills set required to do so? How were these skills honed? What was the learnings? How can these skills and journey bring value to the future employer? Remember, excessive humility does not do us justice. Share your story. As we progress in our careers, we often overlook experiences that we believe may not be relevant or may be perceived negatively. For me, it was my eight-year stint as an NFL cheerleader. But I'm thrilled to announce that I'm headed "back" to be a judge for the final auditions of the team I once cheered for this Sunday. I'm discussing it today without any shame because not only did I have a blast, but I also learned valuable lessons that have influenced the way I work today. I discovered how to work on a team, when to lead and when to follow, how to work through conflict, and how to give and receive constructive feedback. Additionally, I learned how to work with different personalities, communicate effectively, and advocate for myself and my team. My favorite lessons were around exhibiting calm under pressure, gaining confidence in a variety of situations, demonstrating empathy, knowing when to offer help, goal setting and problem solving, and persevering to see things through to the end. These lessons have made me a better business owner and employee. It's a part of what makes me who I am today. So let's embrace all of our experiences, even if they don't fit into the traditional career mold. Who knows, they may just be the key to our success!

When I first started my career, I believed success was a straight line moving up. 📈 I thought I'd have one job at one company and climb the ladder until I reached the top. But life had other plans. The reality of success and growth is much messier, like the right side of this picture. If you look at my resume, you'll see multiple roles within the same company and several positions outside of it, each with different levels of leadership and ownership. I used to think that moving around meant I wasn't successful. But I've come to realize that I'm always a work in progress. When I'm in a valley, I know God is teaching me through the hardship. When I'm on a mountain, He's preparing me for the next phase of my journey. Success isn't a straight path; it's the sum of all the valleys and mountains we face along the way. 🌄 How has your journey shaped your view of success? The bittersweet moments. Last week, my youngest daughter started school and the comment I received the most was how exciting this time is and that I was going to have more time for myself. I didn’t feel that way, at least not completely. Sure there’s more available time during the weekdays, but there’s also less 1:1 time with my daughter, giggles, play and cuddles. It’s not about, I feel this OR that. Many times, it’s about feeling this AND that, AND something else. Think about all the emotions that you can have when: ✳️ Your best team member tells you they’re going to a new job to develop their career. ✳️ You move to a new role and you have to leave the team that you love working with behind ✳️ Your business is thriving and you’re going through a difficult personal situation ✳️ You finally get the job that you want only to find out that your boss is the worst you’ve ever had Those bittersweet moments are the ones that teach us how multifaceted our emotions are. #emotions #leadership #leadershipisapractice

Out of left field post: Recently at an event in San Diego, we had people pair up and give each other positive feedback. I received a compliment that I loved. I was told I had a nice "aura" and a kind welcoming way about myself. Right after this experience, I came across a sign that read, "It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice." This message struck a chord with me on multiple levels. I thought, how funny, those that think they are important are generally the ones who aren't nice. I'd rather not think of myself as important (I like myself don't get me wrong, I'm just not an egotist). I just want to be important to people because I'm nice and help them in one way or another. I watched Ava Duvernay's masterclass this morning and her whole way of leading is to make sure everyone on her team, crew etc. know they matter. They need to know their opinion can make a difference. And, to make everyone feel like they are a person who is valued. I'm lucky I work with Lisa Wilding-Brown who takes this model in her leadership style. It's not always been that way in my career. Which makes me appreciate that she does even more. Not sure why this is on my mind, but I'll say this, if you think you're important and it results in not being nice, I just may turn into someone not nice and let you have it.
