Has Mates in Construction made a difference out on site...... I think so & below is a real account of how I believe the combination of great leadership & the messaging & support from our dear friends at Mates helped a subbie, not once but twice, when they needed a Mate to ask "Are you ok" This is what happened H&S manager out on site looks at the subbie, who like many subbies is out on their project/site daily. He notices that this particular subbie is not his normal self & in that moment the H&S manager doesn't keep walking by but instead walks over to said subbie & asks that question, that really important question, "Are you Ok". Visibly not OK the H&S immediately says "Hey come into my office & in that safe place the subbie & manager share some intimate moments where the subbie felt valued, where the subbie could just stop for a few minutes & let another Tane/Man know, who he worked closely with, that things were tough atm but also he felt that having the support from a client in this space was a huge relief. Back out on the same build & few months later the same subbie was grieving the sudden loss of a close whanau member. Whilst not visibly upset another senior site manager who is walking past this subbie stops & asks that same question, "Hi mate, are you ok, we heard about your loss so I thought I would check up on you" On both of these occasions the mere fact that someone from the site team stopped to check in made the subbie feel as he was valued & that the relationship between the contractor & the client was more than just men trying to build large structures, that the site team was looking out for everyone, that the site team had everyone's back when it came to the wellness of their people on the ground. Why is it that this particular project shines when it comes down to looking out for your Mates? I strongly believe it comes down to the leadership of the PM, DK, & it comes down to the consistent positive approach that Mates have been delivering for four & some years. Are we seeing a culture change of how we approach wellness out in our commercial construction community? Are we seeing that the modern-day project can be run where wellness & values shine? Good things take time, we all know that saying, but when you are on as many large comm builds as I am & have been for a few years, having these two examples placed at my feet, are in my mind the byproduct of the amazing work that Mates has achieved & the amazing leadership style of NZ Strong as a whole. So a huge kia ora to both organizations as I needed my Mates then. Pictured here is Jono & Joseph & they both work on NZ Strongs Hanger Four project. Joesph is the SSM & Jono (cap on) is the H&S manger. As we come to the end of Men's Mental Health Week maybe it's a good time for all of us to ask that question. I work for a subbie on this project, and these are two top class guys. They walk the talk when it comes to looking after those around them.
So good . Well done …
