You weaken your leadership because you're trying too hard.   - Trying too hard for attention. - Trying too hard for influence. - Trying too hard for relevancy.   And so you're out there trying too damn hard to prove your value.   And in your efforts to try so hard, you feel overwhelmed by what feels like a million different problems.     Clarity is the first moment of recovery.    So, the clear news is you don’t have a million problems. You really only have one. It’s a problem I call “The Overs.”  See if you recognize them: ·     Overworking ·     Overdoing ·     Overgiving ·     Overthinking ·     Over-functioning ·     Overaccommodating ·     Overdelivering   You (often unconsciously) believe that if you just work more, think more, do more, then you will be safe and successful.   Claiming your power over your life depends on first understanding how your brain actually constructs it.  Your brain is a pattern detection machine running on the evidence *you* feed it through your behavior. This means that the central problem of “The Overs” is not that you stayed up until midnight again or kept your mouth shut again. It’s that each time you do these things, you feed your brain more evidence that the reason you lived to see another day is because you overdid it. Simply put, the very process you're using to bring you safety is the very process of your destruction. To change your life, you must first understand how the brain works. When Francis Collins (Director of the National Institute of Health) said that, it was probably in the context of health and disease, but what if we apply the same principle to working relationships? Genetics loads the personality and environment fine-tunes it... We used to think that personality was fixed from birth, but modern neuroscience begs to differ and that fits with what I see and hear in my work. Some things appear to run deep and stay consistent over time, however, we can change and adapt if we make a conscious decision and apply ourselves... it just takes the right motivation and methodology. Hey World-Changers! ‘‘Tis the season of giving and receiving…. Of course I’ll share some neuro-perspectives on these acts. THE NEURO-PERSPECTIVES ...BOTH giving and receiving activates the brain to enhance our empathy, compassion, immune system and human experience of the world… THE NEUROSCIENCE…🧠 We increase the the brain chemicals endorphins and serotonin making us feel good and improve our immune systems. MRI studies show that the pleasure and reward centers of the brain activates as well as the parts of the brain associated with bonding and social connections. Nerdy brain term moment...the anterior insula in the brain also gets activated, which is responsible for our body-mind-connection. WHY IT MATTERS… We are social beings. The acts of giving allowed us to survive and thrive together. To continue on this trajectory we can be more intentional about giving of our time, energy, compliments and things when understand the impact on the brain on both ends. SIDE NOTE: When someone observes these acts, they also literally experience the benefits via the activation of mirror neurons and emotional brain circuitries responsible for empathy and compassion. Lastly, often time we (or our clients) feel disconnected during this time of year. Share with your clients that the acts of both intentional giving and receiving are mental tools that allow us to feel better connected to ourselves and to others. GO DEEPER... To all senior leaders 🎙️📚 Just watched insightful talk that delved into various aspects of mental wellness 🧠💡 🔑💼 It was an eye-opening experience to delve into the deep interconnections between leadership and stress, and how the two can significantly impact organizations. The talk highlighted the critical role that stress management plays in effective leadership, emphasizing the need for leaders to proactively address their own well-being to foster a positive and thriving work environment. 💪🌟 As I reflect on the insights shared, I realize the immense responsibility we have as leaders to prioritize self-care. Summary: Stress is contagious, CEO's stress impacts organizations, and managing stress is crucial for leadership. Hormones like cortisol affect interpersonal dynamics, and physical exercise helps reduce stress. Quality sleep, spending time in nature, and having a purpose beyond self also contribute to mental well-being. Recognizing patterns, deliberate practice, and understanding beliefs are steps to change behavior. Neuroplasticity, self-esteem, and neurodiversity play significant roles too. The mind-body connection, posture, and the power of words impact overall health and well-being. The logic brain is only 5% of the equation. Resolutions are tough to follow through because we can only grit it out in the 5% for so long. Dealing with the other 95% of your subconscious thoughts is where the growth takes place! The Healing Power of Support It's so important to receive support. It's the second part of the essential sequence to healing, according to Dr. Aime Apigian. When you take a leap of faith and recognize that you need help, you will get rewarded for that calculated risk. Support calms the stress response in the body. The first part of the essential seqence to healing is safety, for you to feel safe in your body. Once these two things have been met, safety and support, that's when you can begin to expand your consciousness a/k/a your heart a/k/a your subconscious/body. Once you stop isolating, which you were doing because you were trying to spare yourself from being hurt and disappointed, your heart will say thank you. Your nervous system will breathe a sigh of relief, "Ahhh...yes let me rest here in this safe space for a moment." It's a safe space when others will truly listen and honor your experiences. There is a tricky balance to not get too caught up in our yown narrative, though, and to be resourceful and figure out how to move forward. A supportive community can help you find this grounding and see you through a more objective lens. We don't see our own blind spots.
