Not surprised by the below. We will continue to see lawsuits like these until a federal legislative structure comes out on the proper governance of data privacy and data use. Data warehousing, resale, and collection needs better oversight otherwise we will continue to see companies of all sized not held accountable for the governance of personal data.
RICO class-action data privacy lawsuit filed against H&R Block, Google, Meta. Here's what you need to know: 1. H&R Block is being sued under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) for alleged collaboration with tech giants Meta and Google to embed "spyware" on the tax firm's website to profit from scraped tax return data. Trial lawyer R. Brent Wisner claims this constitutes a pattern of racketeering on a massive scale. 2. According to the class-action lawsuit, H&R Block along with Meta and Google failed to properly inform consumers of their data being sold and purportedly deceived customers into sharing their data for financial gain. A congressional report released in July had revealed the use of tracking pixels on H&R Block's website facilitated by Meta and Google. 3. The suit points out companies cannot share any customer information disclosed during tax preparation for any purpose other than preparing tax returns. This puts H&R Block at risk as it allegedly shared a large amount of data, including sensitive tax situation details, via the Meta Pixel. Despite the claim that all shared data was anonymous, the FTC has stated that it could easily be used to identify individuals.
