D&I is always at the forefront of my mind. This week I was really lucky to attend a one hour session on the subject, the external speaker was great. Last night, I decided to go late night shopping in Leeds for some last minute holiday clothes (I fly this weekend) and I had two completely different conversations with staff in shops… 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: “This bikini is nice, are you going on holiday?” 𝗠𝗲: “Yes, I go to Monaco on Sunday” 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: “Oh! That’s where the Formula 1 takes place isn’t it? Is your husband making you go there? I bet you’re not into Formula 1” My face 🙄 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: “Are you going on holiday soon?” 𝗠𝗲: “I go to Monaco on Sunday this weekend!” 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: “Oh amazing! Where they race in Formula 1? Are you a Formula 1 fan?” My face 😃 Im pretty sure the staff member in shop 1 didn’t mean any harm. The two things I wanted to point out from this was number 1, do not assume everyone is heterosexual. I do have a husband, but if I had a wife I might have taken offence to that. My advice would be to always ask, or say partner if you’re unsure. The second is do not assume people are not into certain sports (or any other subjects for that matter) Those that know me know I’m a 𝗛𝗨𝗚𝗘 Formula 1 fan! So today, or this weekend, or next week, I ask that you keep unconscious bias at the forefront of your minds. If you are interested in the business of film and entertainment, Jonas Barnes is someone you need to follow. Too many people look at box office numbers as if they exist in a bubble and declare movies are unprofitable and the theaters are dying (of course some are). The reality is there is so much more to profit than ticket sales. Jonas gets it. My hope is that Hollywood will realize consumer economics demands a massive rethink of the way it does business. I also hope our content creators will realize ticket sales are driven by more than just their great stories and visuals. Complain all you want about only sequels, remakes, and family films getting the green light or a coveted theatrical release. People only have so much expendable income. The bar for success is really, really high now. Risk can be far greater than the reward. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s just math. If my kids were younger, I probably would have taken the whole family to the theater to see “Garfield” and inevitably I would have caved and bought some Garfield toys or at least some kind of merch. Even if we went to the matinee, with concessions that trip to the theater would have cost me more than I would pay for a six-month subscription to any streaming service. And I probably choose to wait a few months for “Furiosa” until it is streaming somewhere if not available for a $19.99 rental. Believe it or not, people still prioritize a family experience over their own tastes in movies. My kids are older now so I actually saw “Furiosa” in a Cinemark XD theater. It was brilliant, and I highly recommend seeing it on the big screen. But I know that I am the exception to the rule.

The real story here isn’t the box office grosses. It’s the #merchandising. Yes, Garfield is gonna make more money than Furiosa. $50 Million Budget v. $168 Million Budget.
