Faults | Open Pits | Piles https://lnkd.in/d9ebp6sz Case studies of landslide in heap leach pad, on open pit slope. Unless major accidents occur, mining has a very secretive literature. Sometimes near misses, sometimes cheap misses or small-scale mass movements on the rock can be neglected, rightfully or unjustly, by taking into account the planning and execution process during operation. Just as the relationship of occupational safety with statistics rather than feelings is consistent, the problems experienced with faults in open pits and underground mines, if any, will be compatible with the data kept. While making the plans of pit design or stockpile mass areas, it is very important to cross-check your designs and get the opinion of different sciences. You can only foresee risks and opportunities in applications such as sustainability and future plans, mine expansion and capacity increase through meetings and evaluations with all relevant units/departments. 🌍Ensuring Slope Stability in Open Cast Mines🏔 As we reach the height of the rainy season, ensuring slope stability in mines becomes even more crucial. With rain affecting the strength of materials and increasing the risk of ground falls, it’s essential to understand the geology and conditions of your site. In mining, experience and professional judgment matter—especially in geotechnical engineering. While these insights can’t always be easily measured, they play a huge role in making the right calls on the ground. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to the geotechnical design and operation of a mine. Every site has its own unique challenges, and the variability in lithology & ground conditions means that what works for one mine might not work for another. It’s important to approach each problem with an open mind, recognizing that different but equally effective solutions can address the same issue. Ensuring you consider the lithology, shear strength of the soil, its geological structure is key to making safe, smart decisions most especially in designing slope angles and catchment benches. And at the end of the day, it’s about striking the right balance between safety and keeping the operation economically viable. When it comes to operating machinery near edge walls, safety is more critical. Avoid undercuts and a good practice is to always position excavator tracks facing the wall at some meters, allowing for a quick retreat if there’s ever a ground slide. I recently supervised some edge wall trimming before putting the catchment benches at my site and, in a video I captured, you can see how this small adjustment made a big difference in safety. On Sunday morning, I was rudely awakened by the blasting sound of low flying jet, and I got curious- just how loud can blasting on a mine sight be? Blasting is one of the most critical aspects of mining, directly impacting both efficiency and safety on-site. Proper blast design and execution can greatly enhance fragmentation, reduce equipment wear, and optimize downstream processing. However, the challenge often lies in balancing effective fragmentation with the need to minimize environmental impacts such as vibrations, noise, and fly rock. For those of you experienced in this area, what approaches or techniques have you found most effective in optimizing blast outcomes while controlling these factors? Faults vs UG Production⚠(EN, https://lnkd.in/dsbgDM8D) Longwall mining (coal), block caving (porphyry Au-Cu) and sublevel caving methods of underground productions are affected seriously by faults for ages. You will not be able to observe or will have limited observation in the underground openings you create with these production methods, so there will be no data that you can confirm, develop and detail while production continues. Before even planning the production, revealing the faults and structural geology is pretty much important. Especially late-stage faults are zones that are very likely to contain and transfer water because they approach or can reach the surface and have high permeability at the groundwater level. In addition, these fault zones are the most recent discontinuities and are often areas where low adhesion is observed in the surrounding rock due to their unconsolidated nature and recent movement. Blasting in these areas will cause block slides along the surfaces due to low adhesion, block blockages in underground openings, or problems in the blasting technique due to clay and water content. Also subsidence risks and sudden gas pressure risks due to block sliding are another possible dangers. Such problems you experience may cause difficulties in controlling production. Another case of failure of an geotechnical structure. The knowledge of geotechnical behavior of all material is mandatory in all cases to prevent unexpected events. several lessons can be drawn from this faillure: - The impact of water saturation (pore pressure) of leaching backfill (loose materials) on liquefaction and Shearer résistance; - Questioning practices in the monitoring of these loose materials: deposition and confinement; - The importance of geotechnical instrumentation adapted to the problem, etc.
