Simple class assignment for students to learn user experience: GPT powered battle simulators. Made this as a version of a text based Street Fighter game. Configuring this helps students understand the user perspective and create something for the proper intended audience. #highereducation #k12education https://lnkd.in/g5fVJKUq

Tesla continues to put on a clinic of how to become irrelevant. Though the core business might be seeing an uptick in deliveries and the power division showing profitability, Tesla is an optimism company. It thrives on the promise of new products. The robotaxi event had all the appeal of a wet fart. In the tech space, the visionary approach did well for decades but now it is about practical application and deliverables. We saw this with Apple in their latest iPhone announcements and that it would be after launch that the real big push of Apple Intelligence would take hold. The promise of "unsupervised" full self driving vehicles has been a Tesla promise for over a decade now and they are still behind (Waymo is already open to the public in some markets where Tesla may get there next year but is doubtful). They have also set a track record of over promising and under delivering on production so when they say 2027, they mean 2030+. The lesson to take away from this, kids, is that you want to underpromise and overdeliver. Be pragmatic and realistic in your approach and temper the expectations. Most likely you are going to reach past them and that gives you greater runway for future projects. #tesla #autonomousdriving #artificialintelligence #innovation #tech

Some of my favorite days at Maryville University of Saint Louis are career fair days. Great to see my students getting ready for the next leg of their journey in life. Plus I usually get asked to tie atleast one necktie which makes me feel very useful. We always have a great group of students hungry to work, learn and grow as technical professionals. If you have internship or FTE hiring needs, I have a bunch of students reaching those points now so feel free to reach out.
A huge thank you to Arren Romeril and his fantastic team—Kirby Cooper, M.Ed., Emma Bible, Sam Gavic, Elyse Waterhouse, and Jenny Swenson—for their dedication to our students and organizing another stellar career fair! The turnout was incredible, and it provided an amazing opportunity for our Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Data Analytics, and Data Science students to connect with and engage potential employers. Your hard work and commitment to delivering these valuable experiences make a significant impact on our students’ futures. It was wonderful to hear such positive feedback from employers about the professionalism and preparedness of our students. Career fairs like this are crucial in shaping the career paths of our students, and I am grateful for your continued efforts in making these events both memorable and impactful. Thank you for everything you do to support the success and growth of our students! Had the honor and pleasure of talking to Keeley Construction Group folks about AI, its applications and ethical practices today. Thanks for MaryvilleWORKS. It was wonderful to field such thoughtful questions and see a great interest in using AI to augment and enhance roles. #artificialintelligence #innovation #technology

Today is one of my favorite days in database class. I flood the students with every cast member and relationship detail in Vanderpump Rules and its spin off the Valley. The whole goal is to have them turn it into an effectively designed database in SQL for them to run queries off of. It such a confusing web of data that they instantly freeze in place. It leads to a good discussion about what data is truly valuable for what they are looking to answer (coincidentally at least one group focuses on how much of a garbage human Jax Taylor is). On a day that students showed up soaked to the bone after walking across campus in a downpour, couldn’t think of a better way to have a 8:00 am class. #database #highereducation #sql #vanderpumprules #bravoverse

Looking at OpenAI’s new o1, I can say that this shows more power but in a limited fashion. I have seen it reason out more complex problems that are coding and math related. However, the use for content generation seems highly limited. It seems like it is over simplifying anything that is more creatively focused. For students in the sciences, I think this shows we need to keep stressing the understanding of application and why we do things as the effort keeps moving towards debugging and away from hard coding. #artificialintelligence #openai #chatgpt #innovation #technology

I started coding when I was nine. I’ve pushed thousands and thousands of lines of code. I’ve shipped and built numerous tech products. However, none of that compares to the feeling of using all that tech knowledge to recover my step daughter’s Roblox account. #tech #gaming #proudstepdadmoment

This morning my 21st year in the education space and 7 years at Maryville University of Saint Louis. It was great to walk in at 8:00 am to a room full of comp sci students ready to learn about database design and development only for the conversation to evolve into talking about the Telegram CEO arrest, tattoos, Pepsi products, and wealth management. The point was that we are all data and data is everything. A deep techno-philosophical discussion based on real world technical applications is probably not how students wanted to start there Monday morning but that’s the luck of the draw :) Looking forward to another year of showing these kids how to fight for the user. #highered #innovation #activelearning #Tron

The week just keeps on rolling as we get ready to move into the new semester. Got the pleasure of running some AI breakout sessions earlier this week. Wednesday morning the faculty of Maryville University of Saint Louis worked with shared content areas to ideate and develop strategies around AI so our students can succeed in an AI powered world. I can tell you that the questions and thoughts were easily the some of the best I've seen on this subject. Why? Because they all focused on what was best for the learner in order to prepare them when they leave our institution. This also means that faculty and staff are central to discussions and decisions about AI tool development and deployment. With that, we were able to introduce our faculty and staff (500+ folks) to You.com and set up a community of practice through Slack today. I love that all the folks involved have been working with a mentality of what is best for our learners while also understanding that we will continue to ideate, improve, and implement as the technology and its applications evolve. #highered #artificialintelligence #innovation #technology
