This story may be found in districts around the country, yet most districts and schools do not track their college graduation rates. More importantly, use that data to inform their counseling and whole school college pathways engagement with students and families. For fellow educators, how do you use your college graduation rate data? Are parents and students informed about which colleges alumni have been retained and graduated from at a more than 70% graduation rate? Are students and families discussing funding college throughout their high school tenure? Do we give students and families language to engage prospective colleges that may have below 70% graduation rate, but might be a fit for a student, how students are guided and supported to graduation and what challenges lead to students not returning or graduating?
I believe in Newark students and know educators want to do the best they can to support student postsecondary college success, especially if students have expressed college as a goal (application to high school is usually a sign). Hopefully this information may be leveraged towards that goal.
