I had a very stimulating day at the online RICS Global Construction and Infrastructure Conference today. I want to share a big thank you to all of those who spoke and all those involved in organising it. It covered a number of the key topics facing our industry, from supply chains, through global construction economics, and digital tools to sustainability and pushing towards net zero carbon. For those of you interested in more detail, some of my key take aways from the day were: - That the industry drive for a more sustainable and lower carbon future can become our selling point for new generations: as a practical way to improve our world (as explained by my fellow Arcadian Steve Armstrong) - The importance of investing in transformation when digitising our businesses: it's not just about purchasing the best software. - The crucial role that risk and financing have in helping us to adapt to climate change, and the importance of supporting discussions on adaptation at feasibility stage. - The imperative to move to low carbon, nature based solutions for providing the climate resilient infrastructure we need - Continuing to improve our ability as an industry to connect data across disciplines and services to support better decision making. - The need to get the right supply chain in place in response to the challenge of skilled labour shortages, as headlined in Arcadis' International Construction Costs report (https://lnkd.in/e9jrAAf8)

For decades, the UK government has tended to focus efforts on reducing operational (or Scope 2) carbon emissions, often overlooking embodied carbon; a much larger contributor to emissions in the built environment. While the practice of reporting embodied carbon is gaining traction across the construction industry, the lack of a unified industry approach remains a significant barrier to effective solutions. Fortunately, resources are available to assist in this task. The RICS Whole Life Carbon Standard (2nd edition) provides the methodology to assess embodied and operational carbon measurement in the built environment, enabling the industry to benchmark and report carbon emissions. This helps everyone in the industry - architects, engineers, and designers - to access the same information to drive meaningful impact. What barriers do you think the industry still faces when reporting on Whole Life Carbon Assessments? How do you feel these could be overcome?

Your Mandatory topic NCC ! Exceptional Presentation, Outstanding Presenter ! This presentation will delve into the following topics: What exactly are embodied emissions and why should we care? Exploring their components and real-world impacts. Demystifying the process of calculating them. Why they should be front and centre in every development project. At the end of the presentation attendees will be able to: Understand what embodied emissions are and why they’re important. How embodied emissions are applied and calculated. Understand the requirements by Sustainable Buildings SEPP and the trajectory for the future. #InHouseGroup3 #YourCPDprovidersince2008 #ArchitectsAustralia #EngineersAustralia #CertifiersAustralia

Here's a sneak peak into some of the insights that will be expanded on in our 2025 Global Cost Report!
"In 2025, it will be important to understand the scale and scope of known and potential risks for projects as early as possible. The construction industry must focus on building resilience to adapt to pervasive uncertainty.” Rachel Personius, Associate Director in Minneapolis, looks ahead to 2025 and identifies the key trends that will impact the construction industry around the world in a report published in ENR. https://lnkd.in/gPpQVprz
