The ongoing crisis in Lebanon has left 809,043 civilians internally displaced (OCHA) and 795,025 refugees from conflict-affected states (UNHCR). Since 2019, Rise Up Humanity has been working closely with Syrian refugee camps in Northern Lebanon, implementing impactful projects that have supported thousands of displaced families. Today, they are partnering with a dedicated team on the ground to provide safe and warm housing solutions for the most vulnerable refugees—many of whom have fled the horrors of war and cannot return home due to ongoing threats. They have secured land and are ready to build essential tent structures made from wood and canvas, along with toileting and showering facilities. But they need your help. If 10 people donate $50, Rise Up Humanity can provide a family of 4 or 5 with everything they need to stay warm and off the streets. With winter approaching, many families are forced to sleep in cars or under trees, facing the harsh reality of cold nights. Your contributions can save lives and alleviate the suffering of innocent families. 100% of donations go directly to their projects. This initiative is led by Vice-President and co-founder, Tamara Sharifov, LCSW, MA, MS, an expert in psychotherapy, humanitarianism, conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and global and international affairs. Tamara was part of the first humanitarian medical mission bridging medical doctors with mental health clinicians at the Syrian-Lebanese border in 2018, just a week after the devastating chemical attacks on civilians in eastern Damascus. The latest organisation is The Welcoming, a Scottish charity dedicated to supporting asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in Edinburgh. We spoke with The Welcoming's Chief Executive, Tesfu Gessesse, about how funders can best support their work and what changes they would like to see over the next five years. We have launched a GoFundMe Campaign to Help Ukrainian Families Fleeing War in Thunder Bay. Our local chapter in Thunder Bay has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Ukrainian families who have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing war in their country. The organization envisions creating a Transitional Guest House in Thunder Bay, providing a safe environment for these families to begin rebuilding their lives. To cover household expenses and provide essential support, Grassroots needs to raise $38,000. Did you know that Ukrainians are still arriving in Canada? Since they are not registered as refugees, they do not receive the same level of support. Despite this, they want to stay in Canada, find housing, and secure employment as soon as they arrive. But many of these families end up in Ontario’s homeless system or are teetering on the edge of homelessness, and some are considering returning to Ukraine because they feel they have no other options. The goal of the GoFundMe campaign is to raise $38,000, which will cover rent and household expenses, provide food, basic necessities, and expand volunteer efforts to welcome more families. We have already rented a house, and identified local employers eager to hire newcomers (thank you to Lance Hitz and 3PC - Third Piglet Construction). We are boosting our volunteer team and trying to connect with local service clubs and churches ( Matthew Villella Kevin Holloway @Kevin Holloway Shelley Crawford ), as we are doing this without any Federal or Provincial funding. As such, Grassroots is calling on the community to come together and support this cause. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference in the lives of these Ukrainian families.  Grassroots is committed to making a positive impact in the community, and this campaign is just one of the many ways they are working towards that goal. The organization believes that by coming together and supporting those in need, we can create a better and more inclusive society. Today we are thrilled to announce €500,000 is being allocated to community groups across the island of Ireland, in the fifth year of the Begin Together fund, delivered in partnership with the Community Foundation Ireland.  Grants from €10,000 up to €80,000 will be distributed to 24 groups across the island of Ireland. Irish Refugee Council and Depaul Ireland have each been allocated €80,000 multi-year grants to help to fund longer term projects. The broad range of groups supported include those who are disproportionately impacted by some of the most critical issues in Ireland today.   Aine McCleary, Chief Customer Officer, Bank of Ireland, said: “Since 2020, the Begin Together Fund has been working with Community Foundation Ireland to help to make our society stronger by allocating funds to those in greatest need. This year, we have prioritised projects which build capability and foster inclusion among these under-served groups. We are delighted to allocate grants to a broad range of organisations including those supporting families living in poverty, people experiencing domestic abuse, older people and those experiencing homelessness.    “Along with 20 single year grants, this year, four multi-year grants will be awarded to organisations including Depaul and the Irish Refugee Council, who are working to support those most impacted by two of the most pressing issues we face in Ireland today. It is our hope that multi-year funding will allow these organisations some certainty as they plan to get these future-facing projects up and running.  We wish all the successful grantees well as they embark on their programmes”.
