On Friday, May 10th, 2024, the second WISE Power Session took place at Kwesiedum M.A. Primary School, situated on the outskirts of KEEA near the Western Region. The session facilitated a free, open discussion where students felt comfortable asking sensitive questions and receiving answers they were satisfied with. Students shared insights into their daily lives, discussing how they engage in extra work such as farming, selling in the market, and carrying loads after school hours to afford menstrual hygiene products and other personal needs. https://lnkd.in/dTajKUMZ

On this significant occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, we come together to shed light on a critical issue affecting millions of girls and women globally Efforts to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation necessitate a multi-faceted approach. Education plays a pivotal role in dismantling deep-seated cultural norms that perpetuate this practice. By raising awareness and providing communities with accurate information, we empower them to make informed choices that protect the rights of women and girls. Additionally, advocacy at local, national, and international levels is crucial to push for policy changes that criminalize and deter FGM. As we mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, let us reaffirm our commitment to ending this egregious violation of human rights. Together, we can build a future where every individual is free from the physical and emotional scars of FGM. By fostering dialogue, supporting initiatives, and advocating for change, we contribute to a world where every woman and girl can live a life of dignity, health, and equality. Plant Sexual Reproduction for G6/Y7; we watched first 20 mins of the Private Life of Plants Flowering episode to understand the parts of a flower and the wide range of adaptions to attract different pollinators. We used this information to label and define parts of flowers on a standard diagram. Finally we applied our learning to different flowers each student brought to class, followed by a “dissection” of a real flower. Next action; seed dispersal! #scienceiseverywhere!

In our personality development class, my friends and I took on the challenge of discussing menstruation—a topic that is too often surrounded by stigma and misconceptions. Our presentation delved into the power of a supportive society in normalizing menstruation and breaking down barriers that have kept this natural process shrouded in silence. We debunked common myths and provided factual information, emphasizing the need for education as a key driver for change. We also explored the crucial role of advocacy and activism in promoting menstrual health and rights, and discussed the environmental impact of menstrual products, advocating for more sustainable choices. Our goal was to foster understanding, encourage open dialogue, and contribute to a world where menstruation is seen as a normal, healthy part of life, not a taboo. Let’s continue to raise awareness and work towards period positivity and inclusivity. #MenstruationMatters #BreakingBarriers #PeriodPositive #EducationForAll #Advocacy #InclusiveSociety

Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) Day - 28 May Menstrual exile is a spectrum of discriminative practices that banish or exclude women from their homes, schools, and community life during their period. This exclusion can end, but it requires a collective effort. 🔴 At Samarthya, our community-led approach involves collaborating closely with local leaders and caste panchayats to challenge entrenched norms around gender and reproductive discrimination. 🔴 We actively engage with boys and men to shift attitudes, combat bullying, raise awareness, and foster support for women’s reproductive health. 🔴 By prioritising education, we work with schools and teachers to design and implement curriculums that include timetable provisions and education about female and menstrual health. 🔴 We also hold workshops with high school students to educate both boys and girls on these critical issues. On Menstrual Hygiene Management Day, let's unite to break the taboos and end the stigma surrounding menstruation. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive community for all. #MHDay2024 #EndMenstrualExile #MenstrualHygiene #MahaSamarthya

A group of researchers including Jen-Yun Chou, #ethology and #pig #welfare researcher at Prairie Swine Centre Inc. did a #research trial looking at sociability in pigs. Sociability refers to an individual’s non-aggressive and non-reproductive reaction to the presence or absence of conspecifics and the motivation to associate with them. Research on sociability has been scarce compared to other personality traits, thus limiting our understanding of individual social behaviours which could potentially reflect it. To tackle this issue, the team used a comprehensive approach, combining individual testing and Social Network Analysis. They designed a Novel Peer Test where individual pigs were confronted with an unfamiliar conspecific, separated by a fence in a familiar environment. Pigs’ social interactions in the home pen were also recorded. The results showed that the Novel Peer Test was consistent over time, so it's a suitable personality test. Fight with pen-mates in the home pen predicted more walking by the fence separating focal/novel pig during the Novel Peer Test. Non-agonistic interactions with pen-mates did not predict those with a novel pig. This study provides evidence for the multidimensionality of sociability in pigs. Engaging young girls below the age of 13 years in Kano during the sensitization workshop for BYEI AFRICA I was alarmed by the number of underaged girls bleaching their skin. We gathered a number of reasons, which were linked to self diagnosis, accessibility to steroidal medications, peer pressure, low self esteem, misconception about beauty standards and family ideology on preference of lighter skin tone. As we officially commence the Refefining beauty ASALI Project, the aim is to create more awareness on the health risks of using bleaching products containing uncontrolled amounts of harmful ingredients within commuinities especially among young girls and women, promote safe and sustainable alternatives and empower grassroots community women to produce sustainable products from locally sourced ingredients. Together we can reduce the prevalence of skin bleaching in Africa and curb the increasing health risks associated with it such as skin cancer, kidney and liver problem, infertility and ovarian failure, organ-system toxicity, glaucoma and birth defects. We recently addressed a mixed group of girls in a Government school and were talking about Periods and Puberty. The girls, 𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 9 𝐨𝐫 10 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐥𝐝, 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰, and here in this school, they are not even aware of what periods are and how it will change their bodies. Upon further questioning, I realized the girls weren't taught anything about it because they would read about reproductive organs in the 8th standard... which is very, very late. If the body's growth rate has changed, so should the teachings be as well. We should really, with time, update our educational curriculum to introduce these vital topics at a younger age. Ensuring that girls are informed and prepared for these changes is crucial for their health and confidence. According to a few online shares, around70% 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. By equipping young girls with the knowledge they need about their bodies, we empower them to manage their menstrual health sustainably and confidently. What do you think about early introduction of Puberty and Periods in the schools? How should we tackle this situation while the education system is yet to catch up with the changes? #NaariEmpowers #SustainableMenstrualHealth #SustainablePeriodChoices #PeriodAwareness #MenstrualEducation #BreakTheStigma #PeriodPositive #EarlyEducation #EmpowerGirls #FutureReadyGirls #PeriodsWithoutShame Naari, Women Wellness Initiative Youngistaan Foundation
