Did you miss this? A non-alcoholic spirit was recalled due to being produce in an unlicensed and uninspected facility. The recall notice was posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Non-alcoholic products need additional safety considerations due to the lack of ethanol in production and following up with testing for pathogens and other spoilers is absolutely necessary. Link below to the story. #fermlyknow #knowyourbeer #knowyourcraft #didyoumissthis #nonalcoholic #NA #quality #qaqc #fermentation #fermentationscience

Representative Rosa DeLauro, D-CT, has introduced the Toxic Free Food Act, which would require the FDA to close the “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) loophole and make chemical food additives subject to FDA approval and oversight.

📰 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken a significant step by revoking the regulation allowing the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food. 🚫🌿 🌱 What’s BVO? Brominated vegetable oil is a modified vegetable oil containing bromine. Until now, it was used in small amounts to stabilize citrus flavoring in some beverages. However, recent studies conducted with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) revealed potential adverse health effects in humans, leading to this regulatory change. 🔍 Safety First: - The FDA prioritizes food safety and continually reassesses ingredients. - BVO is no longer considered safe for consumption. - Compliance begins on August 2, 2024, allowing companies time to adjust. In June 2022, nearly 400 people became ill from consuming tara flour, a novel food ingredient used without formal review by the FDA. It wasn't until May 2024, two years later, that FDA formally reviewed and then banned the ingredient from the food supply. Why are food manufacturers allowed to self-approve ingredients for use in food without regulatory oversight? My new perspective piece with Pieter Cohen in NEJM talks about tara flour, the "GRAS" exception to food safety oversight, and what we should do https://lnkd.in/efkNcPNs

Terrific question from the incomparable Marion Nestle. What do believe FDA's role should be? I was at the Consumer Federation of America meeting and recall Michael F. Jacobson's forceful line of #sodium questions and then being dismayed by James Jones response. Based on reactions, so were a number people around me. I've helped lead both FDA's and USDA's food programs, and pressuring industry is a key tool in their toolbox. FDA opted for a voluntary over a regulatory sodium reduction approach. It would seem like pressuring companies is among the agency's most effective tools to make voluntary work. #CFAFPC https://lnkd.in/eMKB2Wq2
