Let's do a #careeradvice post today! Take a look at the below map. While maybe a little outdated (Toys R Us, etc), it visually represents the idea that companies have homes. This means different things for different companies, industries and job types. But what does it mean for job seekers? Some companies just don't have locations where you live. Or the types of job that you want at that company isn't housed there. There are a lot of laws and regulations across different states that impact the location strategy of companies and where they house their employees. Historically - we have seen populations migrate from one area of the country to the other for economic opportunities. This isn't the rule - or a requirement to be successful, but if you want to work at a specific company, it might be required. The takeaway? If you're a #veteran looking for a job post service, or a #collegestudent, or mid-career #jobseeker, understanding where the opportunities are that align with your goal is very important. Find resources in your target geographic area to help you understand that employer and economic landscape like the Business Journal's Book of List (not an ad). Looking for a job hasn't really changed in over 100 years. Right? Applicants review openings, send their information and wait for someone to follow up. What has changed in the past 100 years is the volume of places to search for a job. Most jobs themselves haven't even changed. If I was a job seeker here are three places I would look for a jobs counter to how MOST people look for jobs these days. 1) Google Maps Hiring is local, so many people are looking for or pushing remote work as the solution to unemployment or underemployment. However, its just not typical for everyone. Using #googlemaps with the center point your house, you can search for companies geographically close to you that you might not have considered for work. 2) Chambers of Commerce I'm in Nashville and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce has a career site, and lists their members. Again - you want to find companies you maybe would not have found otherwise. The localization of your job search can help you make meaningful connections that lead to that opportunity. 3) Non-Profits Donor Pages Some of you might have heard me say this before, but finding your tribe is very important. Engaging with non-profit organizations who are helping causes you're passionate about helps you find organizations that are also passionate about that. Volunteer, reach out and engage with theses populations to help increase your network and make meaningful connections. If I was looking at those three places, where would I not be looking? LinkedIn. It is great - and has a place. However, with millions of daily active users so many people are applying to that same remote project manager role you applied to. Diversify your job search off the main sites. Find what locally works for you, and keep having meaningful conversations.
