Breaking: Google is publishing ANOTHER algorithm update! This one is called the June Spam Update, and much like other spam updates, it's very likely to help combat the (rampant) webspam you may come across. It's rolling out over the next week, and here's what it means for travel companies: 1. When Google releases this many updates back-to-back, often, that can mean they're rolling back some of the changes - so if you're suffering in the wake of recent updates, this could reverse some of those losses. We're hoping some publishers we work with bounce back after this update. 2. Google often targets link building with their spam updates. Don't expect your website to be penalized for building links from a spam update, but rather, expect the value of the links that have been tagged as "spam" to diminish. Typically, websites that are penalized for link building receive manual penalties, not algorithmic penalties. And these types of penalties are becoming increasingly rare as Google continues to better understand the quality and value of each link. 3. Spam updates typically impact entire sites, not specific pages. Make sure that every page you create adds value. No more scaled content abuse! Here's what we're doing at Propellic: 1. We'll be auditing all future link building we do to ensure the sites we build links from didn't lose a significant portion of their traffic during this update (or past spam updates). 2. We'll be assessing our portfolio of 40+ websites, monitoring declines, and looking for similarities between sites that are impacted by the update. 3. Most importantly: we won't be making any significant changes to strategy or websites during the update. That can be the worst time to make changes, as SERPs are still refactoring and the SERPs on day two of an update can be very different from the results once that update rolls out completely. #GoogleUpdate #TravelMarketing

Google issues search ranking penalties through manual actions when a human reviewer at Google determines that pages on a site are not compliant with Google’s spam policies. These manual actions can result in sites being ranked lower or omitted from search results without any visual indication to the user. If a site receives a manual action, a few steps can be taken to fix the violation and remove the penalty. This involves identifying affected pages, fixing the issues on all affected pages, ensuring accessibility for Google, and requesting a review from Google by explaining the fixes made. Reconsideration reviews can take several days or weeks, and site owners will be informed of the progress via email. We recently got one client who was affected by this manual penalty for his website, and it needs to be fixed. I will update the case study once we have fixed the problem. Does a high spam score of a website harm a website? Search engines like Google check websites to see if they look natural or spammy. They give each site a spam score out of 100. A low spam score under 10 is good. It means Google trusts the website. But a high spam score over 30 is bad. This means that Google thinks the site may not be fair or that it is to mislead people. If a site gets caught doing sneaky tricks like hiding text or copying others' work, its score will rise. Google then worries people may have a bad time on the site. Google doesn't want to send people to sites that trick or annoy them. So high spam sites will not be shown early in search results where most people look. The site also risks being banned completely if the score gets too high over 50! Then nobody on Google could find or visit the site. Websites need to play fair so search engines believe they care about users. That will keep the spam score down and help the site be seen easily. A low score shows Google that a website is natural and safe for people to trust. March 2024 core update is out. Here is the highlight: This update is more complex than usual, involving changes to multiple core systems and marking an evolution in identifying content helpfulness. Google has enhanced its core ranking systems to show more helpful results using a variety of innovative signals and approaches. The rollout may take up to a month, with the potential for more fluctuations in rankings than with regular updates. Creators are advised to continue making satisfying content meant for people; those not ranking well should consult Google's help page on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content. New Spam Policies: Google introduced three new spam policies to address practices negatively impacting search result quality: expired domain abuse, scaled content abuse, and site reputation abuse. Sites violating these policies may rank lower or not appear in results at all. Affected site owners will receive a notice through Search Console and can apply for reconsideration. Expired Domain Abuse: This involves purchasing expired domains to manipulate search rankings by hosting low-value content, leveraging the domain's past reputation. Google clarifies that using an old domain for a new, original site intended to serve people first is acceptable. Scaled Content Abuse: This refers to generating many pages primarily to manipulate search rankings, often involving large amounts of unoriginal content that provides little to no value. The policy builds on previous spam policies and applies regardless of whether the content is produced through automation, human efforts, or a combination thereof. Site Reputation Abuse: This occurs when third-party pages are published with little to no first-party oversight, intending to manipulate search rankings by leveraging the host site's ranking signals. Not all third-party content is considered a violation; the policy targets content hosted without close oversight intended to manipulate search rankings.
