#davos #wef Great to see more indigenous voices participating and the launch of the Indigenous Peoples’ Knowledge and Leadership Network, which aims to engage 70+ of the world’s most prominent indigenous experts across key areas to build progress towards:  ➡ Advancing indigenous peoples' agendas and voices in the Annual WEF Meeting and across Forum activities ➡ Building greater multistakeholder cooperation in indigenous movements ➡ Facilitating greater exchange between stakeholders through indigenous peoples' knowledge, including business, government, industry and civil society ➡ Promoting indigenous peoples' rights and their benefits to global business agendas Why is this crucial to progress? Despite comprising 5% of the world population, Indigenous people protect 80% of the Earth's biodiversity. How do ocean protection, gender equity, and climate justice connect in building a sustainable planet? According to the United Nations, oceans produce at least 50% of the planet's oxygen and are home to unparalleled biodiversity, supporting the livelihoods of more than 3 billion people. They also absorb 30% of carbon dioxide and regulate global climate patterns. Women play a crucial role in coastal management and marine conservation, representing about half of the workforce in ocean-related activities, including artisanal fishing and fish processing. However, in addition to facing discrimination and inequalities in access to financing and recognition, women in coastal communities experience disproportionate negative impacts, losing income and food security due to ocean degradation and climate change. Indigenous and traditional communities represent 5% of the global population and protect 80% of marine biodiversity, with valuable knowledge about the oceans passed down through generations. Yet, beyond the discriminations that affect their access to marine resources and participation in ocean-related activities, they face a series of threats due to global warming and rising sea levels, which jeopardize their survival and cultural identity. On this World Oceans Day, we need to highlight how ocean protection and gender, ethnic, and racial equity are intrinsically linked. By recognizing and addressing existing disparities and inequities, we can not only promote ocean sustainability but also build more just, resilient, and inclusive societies for all people.
