Meet our next graduate studentship awardee, Priyonto Saha, a second-year master's student in biostatistics, supervised by Zahra Shakeri, Aya Mitani and Kuan Liu. As COVID-19 case counts continue to rise, many patients have reported a range of lingering symptoms for months after their initial infection. This phenomenon, known as long-Covid, is currently only defined by a diagnosis of exclusion. Coupled with a very broad symptom profile, long-Covid presents a complex unresolved mystery for medical researchers. In collaboration with the Clinical Augmented Intelligence group at Harvard Medical School, Priyonto is investigating long-Covid with an interdisciplinary approach in biostatistics and machine learning. His research leverages health data from diverse populations while preserving privacy and ensuring fairness. With his project, Priyonto aims to provide healthcare professionals worldwide with a better toolset for characterizing and diagnosing long-Covid.

SOCA officials had the privilege of engaging in a productive and insightful conversation with Prof. Helen, the newly elected President of IFAA. Our discussion encompassed a broad range of topics, including teaching methodologies, curriculum design, various courses, advancements in Anatomical Sciences education, infrastructure in medical Institutions, faculty-student ratios, Grants and research initiatives within India’s medical institutions. During our meeting, I proposed that IFAA consider funding research projects for young anatomists, particularly from India and other developing countries, to drive innovation in anatomical sciences. This initiative aims to inspire and empower emerging anatomists to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the field. Prof. Helen’s valuable insights reinforced the significant role IFAA can play in enhancing medical education, fostering research collaboration, and supporting the next generation of anatomists.

Pleased to announce that Professor Alex Jingwei He of the Division of Public Policy has recently won with the 2023 Best Policy Research Award by the Chinese Policy Scholars Group (CPSG, 留美公共政策學會). 🎉 Entitled “Unpack the black box of pilot sampling in policy experimentation: A qualitative comparative analysis of China's public hospital reform”, Prof He’s research article was published in Governance, a reputable international journal in public policy. The authors adopted a novel research design, combining the qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) technique with illustrative case studies, to explain the choice of pilot sampling in large policy experimental programs, a significant question in policy process theories that has gained little scholarly agreement. This article stood out from multiple nominations with its theoretical significance and methodological novelty. CPSG is an international research association of overseas Chinese policy scholars. Fortunately, we’re seeing the tides continue to change—for the 2023-24 academic year, 72% of U.S. medical schools graduated more female than male MDs. Hiring- Medtrain MSCA Post Doctoral Researcher project in optical fibre sensing of biomarkers. Closing date 21 October including writing a 15 to 20 page research proposal and career development/business plan involving a placement in a spin-out. MSCA mobility rules apply so Post Doc must not have resided in Ireland for more than 12 months before the closing date. Title-Cardiovascular Disease Diagnostics: Early warning optical fibre biosensor for N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide biomarker detection. Cardiovascular diseases cause 32% of global deaths, requiring early detection of symptoms. NT-proBNP biomarkers are crucial for diagnosis/prediction of heart failure outcomes. Current methods are slow, so we’ll design, test/prototype a low-cost, bedside sensing device using polymer optical fibre technology to continuously monitor BNP levels, with a one year placement in our spin-out company.
