The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agreed earlier this week to reschedule Cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Rescheduling cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III will likely have impacts on Michigan's cannabis industry. The possible short-term impacts of the policy change include easier banking and financing within the industry, elimination of hiring prohibitions for cannabis users, cannabis research becoming more affordable and accessible, and provide new tax breaks to cannabis companies, which in turn could translate to lower prices for consumers. Adults 21 and older can now possess 2.5 ounces (up from one ounce) and a quarter ounce of cannabis concentrates (up from one-eighth of an ounce). Additionally, the legislation allows medical marijuana dispensaries to serve recreational customers, streamlines licensing, and eases employment restrictions for those with prior felony convictions. Florida Marijuana Initiative Needs 60% Voter Support To Pass, A Threshold Achieved In Only Three Other States Before The measure is likely to receive at least majority support by the voters in November. But that’s not good enough in the Sunshine State, which requires more than 60 percent to pass a constitutional ballot measure. “You still have a large group that still looks at cannabis as the gateway drug where there’s no medicinal benefits.” As the campaign to get recreational cannabis legalized in Florida moves into its next phase, opponents and advocates of the proposal are operating under the same premise: The measure is likely to receive at least majority support by the voters in November. But that’s not good enough in the Sunshine State, which requires more than 60 percent to pass a constitutional ballot measure. Only three states in the country have passed ballot measures on recreational cannabis by that margin—a potential harbinger as Florida advocacy groups prepare to crank up their cannabis campaigns in the upcoming months. https://lnkd.in/ee4T7R-x?
