Did you know that 15.5% of Britain's coastline is susceptible to erosion? More than 520,000 properties in England are at risk of damage, as are thousands of kilometres of major roads, railway lines and stations. The loss of land and the threat to properties and infrastructure force difficult decisions about whether to defend, realign or retreat. Innovative sea defence solutions are becoming increasingly significant. Combining them with traditional hard engineering defences and taking a more holistic approach is crucial if we are to overcome these new challenges and sustain established communities, infrastructure, ecosystems and the economy. We have broken down all of these options and what each mean for ensuring are coastlines are not only protected but thrive 🌊 https://lnkd.in/g4Mjcqmz #CoastalErosion #CoastalProtection #BuildingProgress #AggregateIndustries

I shared my perspective on Asaase 99.5's Evening News on the recurring issue of coastal erosion in Keta and coastal communities in the Volta Region. In my submission I advocated for the following. 1. Engage local communities in the planning and implementation of adaptation measures. 2. Implement early warning systems to alert communities about impending tidal waves to allow timely evacuation. 3. Adopt nature-based solutions as part of our integrated coastal management strategies. 3. Invest in constructing sea defense projects.

This year’s UN #WorldOceanDay theme is ‘awaken new depths’. Chuuk Lagoon is an atoll in the Pacific Ocean, where shipwrecks dating back to WW2 lie corroding and leaking toxic oil – threatening the #safety of this protected reef. Lloyd's Register Foundation is building a global coalition of experts to create technical standards and engage international bodies, to enable a more strategic response to the growing challenge of these potentially polluting wrecks. In partnership with Miami-Dade County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District has released an Integrated Draft Report and Environmental Assessment outlining a comprehensive strategy for managing coastal storm risks in the vulnerable Miami area. ⛈️ This interim report, open for a 30-day public comment period, provides actionable recommendations for reducing flooding from storm surges in the short term while longer-term studies continue. Key Takeaways: #1 - The report evaluates structural and non-structural solutions, such as flood-proofing infrastructure and elevating homes and businesses, to reduce damages from storm surge flooding. #2 - It proposes piloting nature-based solutions, such as living shorelines, to provide storm protection while restoring ecosystems. This could help advance the use of green infrastructure. #3 - The study recommends that Congress authorize programs focused on non-structural measures and nature-based pilots to facilitate innovative approaches. #4 - As an integrated environmental study, the report analyzes the impacts and benefits of alternatives to comply with environmental regulations. #5 - This comprehensive effort reflects the extensive coordination needed to improve coastal resilience. The 30-day public comment period allows engineers to shape strategies protecting communities like Miami from climate risks.
