For those university students who want to help "future proof" their careers, consider choosing a double major. Like diversifying one's financial portfolio, having a double major shields you better against disruptions and earning shocks. For those who's majors are are more dissimilar, this effect is actually larger (see: Hanks et al., NBER Working Paper 32095, January 2024 found at https://lnkd.in/eAsX6UX4). As a corollary to a conversation I've had with many of my current and former students, for those of you who go on for further study, doing it at a different (second) university in a different field also provides beneficial career effects through diversification. Not only will you experience new perspectives, you'll learn from a different faculty, engage with peers from diverse backgrounds, and have more opportunities to leverage your prior learning in your new context. I still greatly value my decisions to get degrees at different schools. In my educational journey, it was University of Florida for my undergrad, Vanderbilt University - Owen Graduate School of Management for an MBA, and University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business for a doctorate. I studied different double majors at each level, and learned from leading, expert faculty (and some similarly high achieving peers) at each step in my journey. I purposefully continued that in my professional career by diversifying the fields of expertise and subjects I sought to master, as well as the nations, sectors, and industries I wished to apply my learning and skillsets. As such, when one field, sector, or set of practices was about to head on a downward trajectory, I could adeptly shift investments of my efforts and time into ones that were pointing up. It worked great for me. Maybe a similar pattern will work for those of you at an earlier stage of your educational and career journeys??
