Happy Memorial Day! The question is often asked "Should I Thank a Veteran on Memorial Day?". Well, we think it's appropriate to thank a Veteran for their service on any day of the calendar year...however, it is a complex question. It is essential to understand the distinction between these two observances to ensure our gratitude is appropriately directed. The 80th anniversary of D-Day has personal meaning for countless people around the world. For me, I think about my father's family fleeing the Nazi Holocaust; about my great-grandparents who died in the camps; about the soldiers who went to war to fight this monstrous, inhuman tyranny; about the citizens and communities who supported the war effort back home; and about the leaders who stood strong in the face of aggression. This day is not just about history. As surviving veterans and democratic leaders wisely remind us this week, the defence of democracy must be a preoccupation of the present. It's astonishing that any politician in any major democracy would dispute the urgency of giving #Ukraine the means to defend itself - or investing in defence and deterrence, or keeping our solemn commitments to our NATO allies. Or that some would admire, defend or collude with hostile foreign powers bent on destabilizing democracies. It's equally astonishing that any citizen of good character would consider electing authoritarian populist strongmen (yes, they are almost always male) who would tear down the institutions that allowed democracy to take root widely and thrive in the decades following the war we remember today. With democratic values under threat all over the world, this day matters not just to the millions of families touched by its history; it matters to billions more -- to every citizen of every democracy, everywhere. #lestweforget #democracy #DDay

MEMORIALS AND MOMENTS A single instance, can last a lifetime. That's what a day like Memorial Day means. Those moments where lives were forever changed, that can't be unchanged. Where lifetimes are cut to their shortest thread. Memorials are personal monuments -- individual reminders of the last and full measure taken. Often, those moments are chosen. The last breath held, before taking the last jump into the fray. Humanity is built and measured on that pause, that space, before everything is taken away. Before the times turn black. But there are also stories of those moments not chosen. Where there was no room for choice -- because the enemy had made the choice themselves. The enemy gets a vote -- & their vote, carries the ultimate & terrible cost. Memorial Day is the moment to remember those who were on the end of both of those timelines. We all hope to measure life in long days and long decades. To look back on our own works & marvel at what we accomplished. But days like these, are where those who can't marvel at their achievements -- must be seen through the eyes of the survivors. It is through these eyes -- upon this horizon -- where we can remember. Where we hope to never forget. Memorial Day is the stark, public reminder to remember what shouldn't be forgotten. While we build upon that past and stand among those souls -- it's a moment to remember, appreciate, and return to what that sacrifice meant. Second-generation Japanese Americans, known as Nisei, demanded the right to join the Armed Forces during World War II. On Feb. 9, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the relocation of Japanese Americans living on the West Coast. 122,000 men, women, and children were sent to incarceration camps throughout the United States. Further, the government classified males of Japanese ancestry as enemy aliens. This classification disqualified them from military service. The Army later loosened this restriction in June 1942. Despite the odds, thousands of Nisei Soldiers bravely served in World War II. Explore the commitment, challenges, and sacrifices of the Nisei Soldiers. Having just put together a new type of #journaling page for the #bulletjournal I currently write my daily notes inside, I thought of a quote to include on this page. Rather than input the quote and repost the page, I thought I'd merely showcase how to use the "lesson" area of this #daytimer note page. Though the first quote I wrote, is related to the recent "remembrance" post I created, this is also tied in to the idea of "recounting" what matters most and encouraging yourself in these things. Honoring Our Fallen Heroes: Memorial Day and Beyond As Memorial Day approaches, I want to highlight the often-overlooked stories behind the names we see on bridges, highways, and cemeteries. These are the names of our fallen veterans, and their stories are fading as the last survivors of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam pass on. My own ancestors served, and I grew up hearing incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice. It's a source of regret that I didn't preserve their words more carefully. We're losing precious first-hand accounts with every passing day. The recent news about the Francis Scott Key Bridge reminded me how little the younger generations may know about America’s past. Let's change that! This May, I'll be sharing stories of some of the places dedicated to fallen veterans. I hope this will inspire others to learn the history behind these names. Is there a national map or resource listing veteran-named highways and bridges? If you know of one, please share! May 2/31 Next time you're on US Highway 12, remember the sacrifices of the Iron Brigade! This Civil War unit, known for its black hats and bravery, suffered heavy losses at battles like Gettysburg. This portion of the highway is also dedicated to such battles as Second Bull Run and Antietam. I was fortunate enough to serve alongside USS Antietam (CG 54), third in name, for four deployments. Learning the history of the Battle of Antietam is well worth the read/viewing (in comments) for those who do not know of this historic battle. While the battle took place in Maryland, there are dedications to those that died in battle all along US Highway 12. Memorial Day is different than Veterans Day. Please don’t thank a veteran for our service on Memorial Day.
