Mosquitoes require only an inch of standing water to lay eggs. But just because you don’t have a pond or water source near your yard doesn’t mean your property is immune from a mosquito infestation. Consider water that pools in flower pots after a rainstorm, collecting around leaky spigots, hoses, kiddie pools, gutters -- any spot where water can accumulate at all is a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes. Deadly diseases that people caught from animals #4 Severe acute respiratory syndrome Chinese bats Civet cats, a subspecies of martens, were initially thought to be the reservoir for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), but a 2013 study found that the true hosts were Chinese bats. Although there have been theories that the syndrome requires an intermediate host (like animals found in Chinese markets), the study showed that bats can transmit SARS directly to humans without any intermediaries. The realization that civets were not responsible for SARS infection came after scientists noticed that civets did not become infected with SARS after exposure to Chinese poultry markets and there must be another host responsible for transmitting the disease. Pandemics caused by bats since the beginning of this century (2002 and 2003) have become "among the most significant public health events in recent history" and have generated intense international controversy.
