Quite rarely you see the full picture. In software development and operations, there are tasks that can be estimated precisely, but in many (if not most) cases you'll miss that one dependency, or hidden requirement, or underestimate the complexity. On the other hand, humans are optimists. That might be the reason we tackle complex tasks without having all the data. P.S. Though, I bet that Crowdstrike and Microsoft had a chance to prevent the big outage last week. It's not the first time update is pushed through those update channels.

What happened with CrowdStrike and Microsoft showcases a phenomenal lack of understanding in how simple processes are often ignored in larger organizations. Someone recently pointed out that being independent and agnostic is irrelevant when it comes to the OS layer. This is not entirely true. Yes, there is an OS, but you can still be independent from its ad-hoc updates. Why do companies have a development culture with 3-4 environments to develop, test, update, and release their apps, yet not apply the same rigor to software/OS updates? Is it really that hard to have a dedicated server to download updates, service packs, etc., test them in a restricted environment, and roll them out only after all checkboxes are ticked? I had a meeting with one of our customers (100K+ employees). This incident affected 0% of their devices because they did exactly what I described above. And yes, this is why exercises simulating all possible risks and creating specific responses are crucial. They should be implemented and functional in real life, not just on paper to get certified. I always say - you have the tools: OS, clouds, code, etc. It's always up to you how you use them. Our vision is that you should do whatever it takes to keep your core services and applications up and running, even when nothing else works and everyone around you is failing. Like the guys I met, who were unaffected by the CrowdStrike and Microsoft failures. Stay resilient, stay prepared.
