Today, I stand before you, striving every day to become the best SWE at Microsoft. But it wasn't always this way. The journey is paved with lessons in loyalty, authenticity, honesty, and above all, humility. These values are the compass that guides me in this dynamic field. Being authentic in your work, honest in your assessments, and humble in your interactions can make all the difference. One question guided my career journey at Microsoft: Who do you want to be and what experiences do you want to create? Long ago, I asked a colleague how he drives his career. He laughed. He said he just focuses on working with great people on great things. And he works backwards from what experiences he wants to create. And what great people does he want to work with. I asked, really, that's it? Yes, that's it. When I thought about it more, I realized it was more powerful than it might sound. Imagine creating a portfolio of epic adventures with great people, doing great thing to look back on. The other piece I wanted here though was to grow better over time. So, I connected with my Future Self to figure out who do I want to become. This set the stage for an incredibly transformational journey. It's my North Start that pulls me forward. Hey folks, gather 'round, because I've got a story to tell that might just help you see things from a different angle. Back when I started at BIT Mesra, I saw a poster of a super-smart girl with a high GPA who'd scored a job at Microsoft. I made a promise to my mom, right there, that I'd do the same someday. Fast forward to my final semester, and I'd actually achieved that 9+ GPA and landed a spot on Microsoft's interview list. It felt like a dream come true. I was on top of the world. However, life had a twist in store. I had my final round interview with Microsoft, and I felt pretty good about it. But when the results came, it turned out my two buddies got job offers from Microsoft, and I didn't. It was a tough pill to swallow, and it hit me hard. Here's the simple truth, though. It's okay to face disappointments, even if it doesn't feel like it at first. Feelings come and go like seasons. What matters is how you keep pushing yourself to grow. The message is straightforward: Keep working on yourself, keep learning, and you'll find success, maybe in a different company or a different role. Trust me, life has a way of sorting things out, and one day, all those old feelings won't matter much at all. I know times are tough right now, but just remember to focus on improving your skills, and one day, it'll all make sense.

They emphasized that asking questions isn’t merely about seeking answers; it’s about igniting growth and innovation. Highlighted during this session was the importance of embracing a growth mindset, where taking risks becomes a pathway to improvement. Well, that got a lot more attention than I expected. Last week, I actually made my first post on LinkedIn: https://lnkd.in/ew-VtXaa. I guess it struck a nerve with folks, or at least caught a lot of attention, so I figured maybe it deserved a follow up. First off, thanks to all the folks who provided kind words and support, it is appreciated. And for some of the well meaning folks who suggested that I should just go ahead and finish my degree, while I appreciate the sentiment, that is definitely not happening. After nearly 30 years in my career, with none of the positions I've held actually caring, I am not interested in going back to school at this point. That being said, I am not fundamentally opposed to education. For folks early in their careers, and recent graduates, it shows that you are capable of learning, and focusing long enough to get things done. But, it's not the only way to break into tech. The main reason I never finished my BS was this: By the time I had finished my Associate's degree, I already had a developer job, and just didn't see the point of continuing on with 4-5 years of night classes, with a full time job, and a commute that kept me in a car for 2-3 hours a day. The thought of it was exhausting then, and even more so now. From personal experience, this hasn't really held me back in my career. I'm not even overly concerned at the moment, honestly. I was mostly just annoyed with this one particular interaction that I thought was weird. To be fair, it was a *much* larger company than I would usually consider, but the tech skills were a near-perfect match, and it was for a smaller team doing newer work, so I figured I would give it a shot. I'm not really disappointed in the outcome so much as the reasoning.
