👀 I’ve NEVER shared this publicly until now 📿 When I was 13, I was diagnosed with human growth hormone deficiency. It was a HUMILIATING trip to the endocrinologist that confirmed my worst fears—I was short and underdeveloped. The doctor, after pumping her hands with sanitizer, asked me to sit on the stiff examination table. She turned to my mom and asked if she wanted to stay in the room. Of course, I didn’t fucking want that. I was an adult with dignity, right? Then she pulled out a necklace of colorful beads—an ORCHIDOMETER (see photo). These beads represented different-sized testicles and were used to measure the size of my balls. How fucking humiliating. Her clammy ass hands grabbed me and checked which color I was most like every 4 months until I was 18 and was told I could finally stop the nightly shots in the stomach. Truth is, I never needed the beads to know I was different. My friends looked like they could be my parents, towering over me. I lost my baby teeth late, got braces late, and couldn’t fit into adult shoe sizes forever. It was obvious. But the problem was that this healthcare experience felt like a constant reminder that something was fundamentally WRONG with me. I now know that that couldn’t be further from the truth. At the end of the day, these early experiences have motivated me to push the boundaries of healthcare to ensure no one feels as failed as I once did.
