After agreeing to take this client's case, Charlie and I drove 4 hours each way to investigate the scene. This case stemmed from a child losing his life at a store under horrifying circumstances. We were there within days of the deadly attack looking for answers: • Did the company know the store was unsafe? • If so, when did they become aware of that fact? • What actions had the company taken to protect customers and employees? • What chain of events led to the attack? • How did this happen? Charlie and I could have filed the lawsuit and then tried to answer these questions from our offices during the discovery process. But evidence disappears. People forget things. Details get fuzzy. Instead, by simply talking to people we were legally allowed to talk to in public spaces, we learned:   • what security had caught on tape (and what they hadn't); • who was present on the day of the attack (and who wasn't); • the corporation's policies for dangerous situations; and • how the company failed to follow their own best practices. My advice to new lawyers—Don't wait for the evidence to come to you. Get out ahead of the defense. Investigate as soon as you can. It's too early to know how this case will resolve. But I do know we're in a much stronger position today because Charlie and I made that drive to investigate and talk to people.
