New study showing drivers struggle to assert safe control for the first 10 seconds after a takeover (ALKS / sort-of-level-3). I've seen previous work suggesting similar things. This study has limitations as all such studies do, but the conclusion seems to be popping up regularly, and seems consistent with other things we know more generally. If you are telling drivers it is OK not to pay attention and then ask them take over, expect that to be a difficult thing to get right, especially if they need to react in a hurry. It will be no surprise if the mandated ALKS 10 second takeover is too short, especially at above slow traffic jam speeds where an intervention more sophisticated than stomping the brakes is required.
