Middle of Six has been connecting with SMPS chapters in sunny SoCal! It's such fun to learn from and be inspired by all the AEC marketers throughout our SMPS community ☀
I feel lucky to have recently spent time with all four SMPS SoCal chapters. My circuit started with SMPS Inland Empire’s membership mixer where we raised a fancy glass to welcome the new board. No photos because "what happens at the speakeasy, stays in the speakeasy."
SMPS Orange County hosted its membership event at the gorgeous Orange Hill venue. Some lucky member took home a day pass to Glen Ivy spa courtesy of Middle of Six (totally jealous!)
My first-ever SMPS Los Angeles event was the sold-out "What's Up in Aviation" panel which included insights and reminders about what is important to ports and municipal clients. So many takeaways!
And I wrapped last week at SMPS San Diego’s relaunched Palm Awards. It had all the things: street tacos, churros for dessert, a bomb photo booth, and my new favorite swag, SMPS-branded fans.

I attended the annual Toward a More Competitive #Colorado (TMCC) event, hosted by Metro Denver EDC, in the company of my colleagues from our Avison Young office.
High-level insights were shared from the 2024 TMCC Report and 2024 Economic Forecast for Metro Denver. Combined, both reports unpack the data highlighting Colorado's ability to compete for corporate attraction and business development. Takeaways include:
🔬 Continued expansion in aerospace, bioscience, and the healthcare industries.
🎒 Colorado maintains a highly educated workforce, yet there are opportunities to cultivate local talent and improve graduation rates.
📈 We're in the preliminary stages of an affordability crunch with home prices in the Denver MSA more than doubling between 2014 and 2022.
🏔 The vibrant lifestyle embedded in Colorado's culture has resulted in a population that surpasses national health standards.

Do you have a no D!£%head policy?
Turns out it’s good for business.
Yesterday I had the privilege of listening to the Chair of the Welsh Rugby Union Richard Collier-Keywood talk eloquently about the important Welsh cultural asset he is now responsible for and the need for it to serve all stakeholders i.e. benefit society beyond the bottom line.
In business it’s known as CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) which emerged as a concept in the 1960s.
Back then it was seen as an altruistic means of doing more with a business than just making money, but it was assumed it would involve sacrificing profit to achieve it.
The growing evidence shows this is not the case.
Being environmentally responsible, inclusive and serving of all stakeholders (customers, employees, investors, the environment and wider society) builds a strong brand, customer engagement, profit and also investment opportunities.
The All Blacks have an NDH (No D!£%head) policy.
They clean their own dressing rooms, carry their own bags and essentially show humility, accountability and a recognition of all the stakeholders in their organisation.
For me, corporate social responsibility boils down to common sense, respect and humility.
It’s good to see those leading our national game going forward aspire to the same ethos.
And at a time of such high attrition in business in general, would it not be best to have a smart business model that ensures that everyone in the eco system is incentivised to see the venture succeed?
Join us next week down in Charlotte! We're going to be bringing the heat in regards to trend-following; how to prepare for chaos, bear markets, inflation and all the rest.

Last week I spoke at the CCIM economic forecast
Here are a few of my predictions;
-more industrial space is set to be demolished than built in 2024
-lease rates and price per square foot to rise
-construction pricing to plateau, maybe even dip a little
-more on-shoring and ancillary demand
How did we get here?
10 years ago, the industrial market was manufacturing and distribution
Today it’s; on-shoring, gigafactories, e-commerce, last mile, cannabis, IOS, quasi-retail uses like sports facilities and breweries, and all of the ancillaries that serve these markets
🔥Columbus, Ohio for golf?🔥
Columbus, Ohio, often celebrated for its strategic business location and vibrant lifestyle, is also swinging its way to becoming a premier golf haven. With a twist of character and a dash of statistics, let’s tee off into what makes Columbus a standout city.
At the heart of it all, Columbus is about progression— and nowhere is this more evident than in its embrace of golf. With over 70 meticulously designed golf courses dotted throughout its metro area—home to a bustling population projected to grow by 5% over the next decade—Columbus offers lush greens for every golfer from novice to pro.
The city's love affair with golf doesn't end on the fairway. Annually, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, sprawling over 1.8 million square feet of prime downtown real estate, transforms into a golfer’s paradise. It hosts multiple high-profile golf expos and tournaments that attract thousands, showcasing the latest in sports technology and gear. This venue isn't just large; it's one of the most actively booked centers in the nation, with over 350 events a year, including a growing roster of major golfing events.
Imagine this: You land in Columbus for a conference. You’re a mere 20-minute drive from joining a local golf tournament or enjoying a leisurely round with potential clients and business partners. Here, business and pleasure not only meet—they converge on the green.
After the 18th hole, the city’s safe, pedestrian-friendly streets invite you to explore. Whether it’s dining at a chef-owned restaurant or catching a live show downtown, there’s plenty to do just a short walk from the convention center.
And let’s talk about the local vibe—Columbus’s golf scene is teeming with character. From historic public courses that tell tales of past legends to private clubs that offer the luxe exclusivity of modern golfing, every corner of this city speaks to a rich, vibrant culture that's as diverse as its landscape.
With Columbus set to expand its convention center to accommodate more sporting events, the future looks bright. The city is positioning itself not just as a hub for business but as a cornerstone for golf tourism and events, promising even more reasons to visit, stay, and play.
So, whether you’re eyeing a permanent spot in our community or just swinging by, Columbus’s doors—and greens—are wide open. Come for the golf, stay for the spirit, and let Columbus be your home course away from home!
P.s. I am not affiliated with the convention center. I just genuinely wish more golf business and events were here.

As the Sales Director for the Greater Columbus Convention Center/ASM Global, I often hear how surprised people are once they visit Columbus and discover our amazing city.
One weekend here introduces you to our food scene, including craft breweries, distilleries, and food trucks. We have a rich collection of museums and are home to the Museum of Art, Center for Science and Industry, and the highly regarded Scioto Mile, a collection of trails and parks along the Scioto River. Other gems include North Market, Short North, and German Village which are all walkable from the Convention Center.
On top of that Columbus is also the fastest-growing city in the US.
I'm not the only one who loves this city.
Forbes featured Columbus, yet again!
Rethink the way you think about Ohio!
Thanks to the PSMA for hosting our panel discussion on exploring how consultants and local governments can come together to envision creative and visionary community plans in light of British Columbia’s new Transit Oriented Area (TOA) Legislation. Thanks to Andrew Tashiro for organizing, Introba for hosting and Will Esaw for moderating, and to my esteemed colleagues, Emilie K. Adin, Dale Bracewell, Nola Kilmartin and Edward Porter for a lively and engaging conversation!
Very inspired by the outcomes of needing to find shared space to explore tradeoffs and synergies to deliver affordable housing, climate resilient design, and vital public amenities commensurate with increased density around transit. We identified the need for consultants to support local governments to establish clearly articulated urban design visions and plans at neighbourhood and district scales to provide certainty and flexibility for developers, supported by the timely delivery of localized amenities. This approach can significantly reduce speculation in the face of non-specific planning policies that normally drives up the price of land, increases approval timelines and costly negotiations.
