The gaming industry is going through a lot right now. Despite many layoffs and openings, the hiring landscape this month seems quite chaotic. There are plenty of senior developers, but often they lack the right skill sets. Meanwhile, numerous junior and mid-level developers possess some relevant skills, but the job descriptions demand senior-level expertise. There are also positions labeled for interns or beginners that unrealistically expect 1-2 years of professional experience in specific languages like C++, Python, or JavaScript. Overall, the hiring requirements from companies are quite a mess. I've been searching for a position in the gaming industry for the past three months with no luck. As a mid-level developer skilled in C++ and particularly strong in Unreal Engine Blueprints, I find it challenging to secure a role focused on Unreal Engine with C++. There are definitely areas I can improve, but without feedback, it's tough to know where to start. One thing I've been advising the many junior/entry level (even above) game devs I speak to who are struggling [/understatement!] to get their break is to keep an eye out for promising start ups... These companies tend to be.. 👉🏽A little more lenient on their hiring criteria 👉🏽A little more obscure, thusly less competition when applying 👉🏽More approachable/reachable which could allow you to strike up a short or long term relationship with the hiring managers or even founders Even if they don't have the role for you right now. Get connected up with them, follow their pages, politely introduce yourself in a sincere, non-generic fashion, get your passion across.
