Having followed this case, it is clear this nursery did not have a positive safeguarding culture in place. Why did other staff not intervene? Why was this staff member’s obvious dislike for Genevieve not picked up and considered unusual? Did staff actually know how to report concerns? Or was this staff member also the DSL?
We must learn lessons from this tragic case. Does your setting have a positive safeguarding culture? Do staff know how to report and refer any concerns? Did the fact this staff member was the deputy manager prevent staff from reporting? Was she also the DSL?
In your setting, do ALL staff, students, apprentices and visitors know:
1) what constitutes a safeguarding concern
2) who they report it to
3) how they can escalate a concern if not taken seriously, including if it is about a senior member of staff, or the DSL
4) how they can refer directly to LADO and know how to do this
Let’s make sure this never happens again.
RIP Genevieve 💔
