Recent data paints a clear picture: there is a major influx of capital being raised and revenue being generated by professional sports; the WNBA is no exception. Thanks to a $75 million fundraising round by the league in 2022, last year there were "36 million total unique viewers across all national networks... the WNBA had its most-watched regular season in more than two decades... and game attendance was up 16% from 2022. [In 2023], the league brought in more than $200 million in revenue, a 200%-plus year-over-year increase." WNBA staff members acknowledge the critical role that raising capital has played in their success. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert was quoted saying, "When I joined the league in 2019, we had one marketing person. Now we have 26. That capital allowed us to hire people so that we could get to work on analytics and fan data, as well as social media. We could also deploy a digital transformation through our app. All of that is really, really important." Maryland’s betting market has contributed over $5 million to the state in August, fueling local education through the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund. The industry has so far donated over $100 million to the cause since the regulation of online wagering. In August 2024, Maryland’s 11 mobile sportsbooks and 12 retail locations handled $377,381,689 in wagers, up 43% from August 2023. The retail sector, for context, handled $8,980,741 in wagers. As we consider our future, the upcoming home games hold significant financial importance, perhaps more so than their impact on our results. Our previous home game resulted in an operating loss of nearly £1,000. We require a minimum of 240 paying supporters to reach a break-even point. Currently, donations and sponsorships help cover the shortfall. We are committed to on-field competitiveness and victories but face financial constraints. Winning games would attract broader support for the club while our loyal fan base stands by us during challenging times. Additionally, the absence of a home base in Skelmersdale is a concern, deterring potential support and sponsorships. While some may wish for a quick and easy solution, we acknowledge the club's past mistakes, which have contributed to our current situation. Nonetheless, we are diligently working to address these challenges. It is time to set aside personal agendas and unite to support the club, safeguarding its legacy. We know opposing forces that aim to hinder our return to Skem. However, we refuse to yield without a fight. We recognise that what we desire cannot be acquired without hard work. Furthermore, altering any negative perceptions will require considerable effort. It is essential to acknowledge that we have more allies than adversaries. Nevertheless, achieving our goals necessitates additional support from the Skelmersdale community. At present, we are utilising our best efforts. Our management team is passionate about football and dedicated to Skelmersdale United Football Club. Despite resource limitations, we have had to diversify our player roster and blend young talent with experienced players as we navigate a demanding schedule. Although it is a challenging and time-consuming process, we have the opportunity to establish ourselves as a formidable team over time. We are engaging with stakeholders who share our vision. Returning the football club to Skem is our primary objective, and if we cannot achieve this directly, alternative approaches must be explored. Perhaps a community football-led regeneration plan may not be as ambitious as it initially seems. Given Skelmersdale's underprivileged status, a collaborative effort could revitalise the town and the club. We are in discussions with like-minded individuals and organisations to explore these possibilities. In the interim, if the residents of our town wish to uphold the club's history and provide their support, their presence and contributions at the games are greatly needed. We urge your support!
