Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, a holiday that celebrates the day upon which the abolition of enslaved people in the United States was truly realized, opposed to legislated. While the Emancipation Declaration legally freed enslaved Black Americans on January 1863, it was not until June 1865 that abolition was enforced across the entirety of the nation and thus freedom came to all Americans. The day serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles Black people have faced and still face in the pursuit of equity and justice.
